Spring 2007: Although this has been the "closed season", many of our members met up at the end of January for an enjoyable dinner and social evening. On 23rd. February we ran a highly successful Race Night at the Star and Garter. The event was very well supported by members of the Bowls Club as well as village members and we all enjoyed the occasion. Sincere thanks to Butch for allowing us to use his venue and facilities, and also to Pete Ford, without whose advice and guidance we would have had difficulty getting this off the ground.
We plan to open the Bowling Green officially, for the 2007 season on Sunday 22nd. April at 2.00pm. Hopefully the weather will be kind to us. On that occasion tea or coffee and biscuits will be served, but we also operate a licensed bar so if you fancy something a little stronger we could also accommodate you. We would welcome new members so if you would like to have a go, please come and join us. We have lots of woods (bowls) which may be borrowed and so long as you do not expect stilletoes, we may also be able to help with the correct footwear. Basically, flat soles are the order of the day!
We operate 6 different league teams, from the basic beginners, and those who wish to play for fun, to the highly competitive Premier League, and the "men only" EBA team (Not very PC but it still works in bowls circles).
On Wednesday 9th. May we shall be hosting a Ladies' EBA (English Bowling Association) match beginning at 10.00 am. So this is where you need to be if you want to see how it is really done! (Refreshments available)
We are planning to hold an "Open Threes" competition on Sunday 24th. June. This will be a competition open to everyone, and we shall be publicising it throughout the many Bowls Clubs in Lincolnshire. The entry fee will be £9 per team of 3, and will take the form of a Round Robin tournament, so for £3 per person you can play all day, and the prize for winning will be £60, with £30 for the second three and £10 for the third three. At this event food and drink will be available all day.
If you have never played bowls before, but fancy something different, this is where you need to come. It is a sport that provides gentle exercise with as much or as little competition as you want. Most of all, we are a friendly and very sociable group who are always keen to welcome new people into our fold.
The entrance to the Bowling Green is situated on the footpath which runs between Alfred Avenue and Prince's Street, opposite the Sports Field car park.
