2004 - 2005 Season Review

END OF SEASON COMMENTS FROM THE CHAIR

So we come to the end of another eventful and entertaining Football Season! I hope you have enjoyed it and are looking forward to a couple of months off before we start all over again.

Senior Review.
If I had written this at the end of March I would have been bragging about our wonderful Season. Sadly, in the end it did not turn out as well as vie had hoped. During April the "Senior" section of the Club lost out in a Cup Final and two Semi-Finals and didn't make the most of the last few Leagues games either. However, all in all it was not a bad season. Andy Gray's Saturday side did reach the David Cooper Final, losing out to a last minute winner against RMSC at Ashby Avenue after leading two nil just into the second half. They finished the season in fifth position in the Lincoln League "Prem" and beat Champions Heckington in the process.

The Sunday First Team led by Alan Brown, Steve Asher and yours truly, had the best season ever, narrowly losing out twice to the eventual winners Waddington, firstly after extra time in the Ron Eaglan Senior Cup and then to a late winner in the Kelly Read Village Trophy. In the League they finished the highest ever, should have been fifth but the League in their "wisdom" gave three dubious points to Friendship which dropped us down to sixth in the Sunday Prem. The Sunday Second Team managed by James Patey with help from Lee Addlesee held their own in Division Two also finishing in sixth place.
Steve Bath's Under 18s were put into the very competitive Premier Division following their performances the previous year in the Southern League. They started very well, challenging long time leaders Mettleham for most of the season. Unfortunately in the end, the strength of the teams representing the big clubs, Gainsborough, Grimsby & Retford took control, however a very creditable fifth place was eventually secured.

Youth Review.
After several years in the doldrums, this year has been one of the most successful for quite a while; Dave Atkin's Under 15s finished CHAMPIONS of the "C" League, winning by four clear points, Lee Adamson's Under 13's missed out on the "D" League Championship by only one point, ending the season as very creditable Runners Up, Our Under 10 "A" side lead by Rob Sarfoot, topped the "C" League for most of the year, unfortunately the season proved just too long and they were pushed back into the Runners Up slot by a very strong Balderton "A" outfit. At the beginning of April things also looked very promising for both Kev O'Rourke's Under 16s and Alan Ward's Under 12s, unfortunately neither could maintain their form and ended the season in fifth and third respectively, albeit both very good performances. Each season is it is my pleasure to welcome new managers to the Club, and this year was no exception, Roy Rogers (Under 10 "B"), who has suffered from "Singing Cowboy" jokes all season, not for the first time I'm sure and Chris Wood (Under 9s) who has obviously decided that its time to pass on the skills he learnt all those years ago at the "Johnny Wood School of Football", unfortunately not the best of seasons, results wise but a great learning experience for you both. Well done to everyone involved with all of the Teams.

I am very lucky to preside over a very enthusiastic and dedicated Committee. Unlike the majority of Clubs we meet weekly throughout the season to ensure that we run our affairs efficiently and effectively. By doing so, we can continue to provide football for as many people as possible, be it playing, officiating or just watching. We are currently awaiting the result of our application for "FA Charter Status". Volunteers are always welcome especially if they come along with moneymaking ideas and enthusiasm.

The costs of running a club of our size are extremely high. It is always difficult to generate cash so we are always very grateful for all of the help we receive from our fundraisers and sponsors without whose help we could not survive. None more so then Butch and Maggie (and Staff) at the Star and Sorter and we thank them for their continuing support.

Finally I come to the issue of our changing facilities, this year as Chairman of the Football Club and of MACLA, I am pleased to report that, due mainly to a change in leadership at the Parish Council, we have after many years of just talking, started moving towards building new Changing Rooms. Plans have been submitted and passed by the appropriate bodies and all that remains is the problem of finance. There are evidently, still organisations out there that are willing to help, so please watch this space.

Have a great summer and hopefully, see you all again, next season. John Wood
