Walkers or “Would-Be Walkers”

Metheringham and the surrounding villages cover a big area and have a sizeable population. Thanks to the work of the Parish Paths Partnership we can now identify a wide range of local walks.

There must be lots of people out there who enjoy walking in the countryside and who would appreciate doing so in the company of others.

I would appreciate hearing from anyone who would like to be part of a “Walking Club”.

Metheringham Parish Paths Partnership

The Metheringham Parish Paths Partnership was set up in January 1999, the “partnership” being between the Parish Council and the County Council Highways Department, who have the legal responsibility for maintaining all field paths.>

In Metheringham parish we have about 40 separately identified “definitive rights of way”, as recorded on maps drawn up in 1948, which are now deemed legally enforceable.

I formed a group of interested people who wanted to learn more about our paths, and we set about surveying all of them - where they are; where they went; are they walkable etc.

Since forming the group it has grown to eight members, and we are not looking to increase membership. We have built a new stile and erected several waymarkers; surveyed 80% of our paths; learnt a lot about the law; found out what can be done now; and what will take years.

The group is willing to answer questions from anyone who has experienced problems with paths within the parish boundary.
