The 2000-2001 season won’t go down in the annals of
history as one of the best the Club has had, but there were some positives.
Of our thirteen teams, just one managed to make it to a cup
final. And that was our Under 9A’s. On an awful night in February they met
Championship favourites, Greenbank, and with time running out the opposition were
starting to panic, but then got a lucky break to go ahead and then ran out 3-0
victors. Our players all came away with a lot of credit.
In the League campaigns the Saturday XI was the only one of
our teams to suffer relegation. Having been members of the Lincoln Premier
League for just two seasons, they were relegated on the last day of the season.
Our two Sunday
Senior sides both had difficult seasons; the First XI found life in the Premier
League (for our first time) tough going and it was not until the penultimate
game that they were assured of retaining Premier status. The 2nd XI
too, in Division Three, languished near the bottom of their Division, but a
spirited end to the season saw them safe.
At Under 18’s a lack of regular fixtures did not help for
continuity and they finished sixth amongst some good teams.
Having come
right through the age groups from 10’s to 16’s and played much of the time
in the top Division, our Under 16’s found their final season in the Youth
League testing, and finished in the bottom half of the table.
Following their
relegation the previous season, the Under 15’s were up with the leaders until
the latter stages of the season, but fell away to finish mid-table.
The Under 14’s, who had been promoted to the top flight,
looked like Championship material but a blip at the end of March saw them suffer
a run of defeats thus ending their title bid; but still they finished a
creditable third.
The bad Winter saw the Under 13’s inactive for long
periods, which did not help their season, but still they finished a more than
pleasing fifth.
At Under 12’s it was a basement battle most of the season
and they finished one of the bottom.
As for the Under 11’s, inconsistency saw them finish
mid table, but to their credit they were competing in the “A” Division.
The Under 10’s were our most successful youth team as they
were league leaders for most of the season, but a couple of poor results saw
them miss the title and have to meet rivals Welton for the runners-up spot.
Our Under 9’s, having been placed in the top flight in
their first season of competitive football, held their own until the turn of the
year, but then a loss of confidence saw them finish in the lower reaches of the
Division.
Finally, our Under 9B team also found competitive football
hard going, but the main thing for them was that they enjoyed themselves – and
that was what it is all about.
Next season the Club will again be running teams at all age
groups, from Under 8’s to Under 18’s, plus three senior teams (two on
Sundays and one on Saturdays). If there are any aspiring footballers out there
who want to get involved, please contact the Club Secretary, Pete Ford, on
01526 320016 – he will put you in touch with the manager(s) of
whichever age group you want to join.
