My grandfather was Bert Milburn, I never knew him. I knew
he was a cabinet maker/joiner and had left Liverpool in about 1942 and moved
to Lincolnshire. From a copy of his death certificate I found that he had died
in 1962 in Middle Street Metheringham.
This was uncanny, as my husband and I had holidayed many
times the area, without knowing how close we were to where my grandfather had
lived and died.
In September 1999 we traveled to Metheringham to see what
we could find, we thought that maybe somebody might just remember him, after
all this time.
Our first stop was the cemetery, but as Bert’s grave does
not have a headstone, we drew a blank. Next we tried Middle Street, to see the
house he had lived in, but this had been replaced by a newer building, another
blank. We then asked a lady for some help, the lady was Rose Creasey, how
lucky we were to have spoken to her, for not only did she point us in the
right direction for his grave, but she also remembered my grandfather, and
introduced us to a number of other people who had known him.
The next person we visited was the Rev Payne at St Wilfred’s,
who very kindly checked his records to find where Bert was buried,
unfortunately, this did not contain the plot number, and as there are three
unmarked graves in the row, where we believe Bert to be buried, we are unable
to mark the grave with a headstone. We have however planted a tree in
remembrance opposite the row.
Now thanks to the kindness of Rose and Peter Creasey,
Brenda King, Maurice Pearson, and George Gray, I now have several photographs
of my grandfather, and now know that he came from Blankney Estate to
Metheringham, worked at Nocton Hall, and R A F Waddington, was a member of the
A F S and had a part time job as a waiter at the Red Lion at Dunston.
If anybody else can give me any further information, I
would be very grateful.
