Metheringham Bowls Club
The Bowls Club in Metheringham was founded in 1927 on land owned by the Townsend Family. The entrance to the green is situated on the footpath which runs between Alfred Avenue and Prince’s Street (opposite the sports field car park). In later years the site was bequeathed to the village (to be administered by the Parish Council) by Miss Patricia Townsend, with the proviso that it should be used as a bowling green for as long as there was a need for it.
The Club caters for all standards of bowlers, from the basic beginner to the highly competitive. We have teams in six different leagues/divisions – one afternoon league and five evening leagues, so once you can get your wood (bowl) from one end of the green to the other, there is no reason why you should not put your name forward for one of the leagues.
We have been fairly successful in recent years – runners-up seven times out of nine in the Lincoln and District Premier League; previous winners and this year, runners-up in the Hospital Cup and Jubilee Trophy; and winners of the City League Evening Knock-Out. Last year the Sunday morning EBA League team, won the league and completed the season without losing a single game. There are two evening leagues and one afternoon league, which are less competitive and more suited to beginners and social bowlers.
We welcome touring teams and in the past we have hosted the Royal Household, the Metropolitan Police, Cumbrian County Representatives and teams from Bath, Bristol, the South East, the North East and virtually every other corner of England. We feel the reason we are popular with touring teams is that we have an excellent green and a bar – both of which contribute to a fair game and a friendly atmosphere.
