Metheringham WI

The WI has been very busy over the past few months and continues to welcome new members and visitors to its regular meetings.
Members and other friends from the village made up a coach to Yorkshire Lavender and Beverley in July. Though the journey was a bit tedious the day was a success.
Winn Sommer was the August speaker and told about entering and compiling competitions. Comping is the second most popular hobby in the country.

In September the WI opened its doors to the whole village, family and friends at a free open evening when Astronomer Paul Money gave us a fascinating and very enthusiastic introduction to the planets. It was a wonderful evening only marred by the lack of non-WI public to help eat the delicious cakes.
The Lincolnshire South Federation Leisure, Arts and Crafts working group staged a Make, Bake and Show competition held at Great Hale hall in September with the theme Autumn Glory. Largely because of the number of classes entered Metheringham came fifth overall out of the 28 institutes whose members entered the various classes. Our members scored highly in cooking, craft, painting and embroidery sections and some members also helped steward. All those who visited the event, as well as the judges, were impressed with the standard and the smell of 37 Parkins being judged was just mouth watering. Two teams from our WI entered the federation quiz and enjoyed their evening at Osbournby despite not quite making the podium.

October saw John Campbell, the Dean’s Verger from Lincoln Cathedral, give us a very entertaining and thought provoking evening telling us about the logistics of keeping the cathedral running smoothly with lots of ‘human interest’ stories. As usual the WI held its wrapped tombola at the Fayre and Feast, there was also a quiz and a photo of our late sixties hippies reached the local papers.
The institute hosted a Table Top Sale in the village hall on 11 November which was very busy and successful and was followed by the November meeting where members and speaker Nigel Creasey were heard in the throes of Irish Songs.
In a break from Tradition the December meeting will not be a Christmas Dinner but a social evening in the Methodist Church Rooms at 7.15p.m. with games, Santa’s sack and members providing festive refreshments. In January members will be having a proper meal out at Blankney Golf Club.
The 2007 programme is looking very exciting and stimulating so please come and join us. We normally meet on the third Wednesday in the Methodist Chapel Rooms at 7.15 p.m. Visitors are welcome for just £1.50 which includes raffle tickets and refreshments.
