Metheringham Football Club

As we move into the last few weeks of yet another busy season several of the Metheringham FC’s thirteen teams still have championship aspirations to aim for. Two of our sides, namely the Sunday Reserves and the Under 10B’s, are presently holding top spot while a further three, the Under 12’s, Under 11’s and the Under 18’s hold second place. Of the remaining sides three hold respectable positions in the top six while four are towards the bottom of their league, fighting to avoid the drop. All in all this is making for a more than interesting finish to the season and hopefully at least one of our sides will lift a title.

Off the field the club has just replaced their temporary dressing room with a new (temporary) building which is somewhat more pleasing to the eye in the car park than those which were there previously. It has cost the club nearly £2,000 to make this facility serviceable and we wish to thanks the Parish Council for all their help in this venture. The club continue to strive to raise money and successful Race Nights at the Star and Garter (with support from our main sponsors Butch and Maggie) and excellent “bag-packing” projects by club members and parents at local supermarkets has brought in much needed cash. In May the Club is looking to hold its annual six-a-side tournament and also a sponsored walk for club members.
Back on the field the club has no cup finals to look forward to this season with the Saturday XI failing to defender the Village Trophy they so gallantly won last season. This season they went out to the side they beat in the final, Plough Skellingthorpe 4-2. For the Saturday XI it has been a brave step as the club felt the team was losing its identity and new manager Stuart Robinson bit the bullet and formed a side which was made up, predominantly of our present Under 18’s This made the side the youngest team to have ever represented Metheringham at senior level. Although the team has won few games they have stuck together and the future has to be promising. The Sunday 1st Xi were the club’s most successful side in cup competition as they progressed to the last 16 teams in the County Sunday Cup. With heavy involvement in cup matches this saw them suffer in the league and until recently because of having played less games than most sides they were bottom but now have climbed away from this position. The club Sunday 2nd could cause the League a problem if they continue to stay in the top two as no club can have two sides in the same division and they would be in line for promotion to the same division as the 1st XI, a great credit to any club. At youth level the club can be proud of the performance of a number of our sides. The Under 12’s have lost just once and scored over 100 goals with new player Sadwin Radi having already scored 60 goals in just 15 games. Other players who know where the net is are Dylan Garfoot (U10A) 40 goals from 21 games, Sam Wooler (U10B’s) with 35 from 18 games, Jac Wright (U12) 30 from 20 games. Lets hope these lads are still with us at senior level. Off the field it is only right that we say a big “WELL DONE” to our Under 9’s manager Matt Petch. This time last year we were congratulating him on achieving his first coaching badge at 16, well now he has achieved his Level 2 badge, an achievement some Premier Managers haven’t even got. Through his achievement he has been invited to help in coaching at Lincoln City’s School of Excellence – a great accolade for a young man. Finally with a membership of around 200 players from as young as 6 years of age the club feel they are an integral part of village life but they wish to express sincere thanks all its sponsors, helpers and parents who once again have been so supportive.
