Metheringham WI

It has a busy Spring for Metheringham WI so I make no apologies for the length of report.
Firstly, Metheringham WI has re-elected Audrey Webb as president for a further year. The committee has been increased with the addition of Coral Earney and Dot Howes. 28 members including two new recruits attended the AGM on Wednesday 14th March. Trophies were presented for the most points for the Flower of the Month which went to Audrey Webb, the most points in the monthly competitions which went to Cathy Mitcham and the Overall trophy went to Audrey Webb with 76 points. Cathy was second with 75.

During the other business of the meeting the members were told that both Janet Baumber and Jo Baker were still in very poor health and sadly Jo has since died.

The committee announced that they have decided to produce a recipe book and would like all members to contribute their favourite recipe(s). They need to be in by the June meeting on Wed 20th June.

The institute has donated £46 to the ACWW Broomsticks appeal raised from the February raffle and the competition funds during the year (members vote with coins!).

Shirley Maddison gave a thorough and entertaining report on the Lincs South Federation Spring Council meeting at Spalding on 13th March which had been a most enjoyable day with good guest speakers including Paul Elliot from R.O.A.D., Andrew Sankey and WI Calendar Girl, Tricia Stewart. Paul was promoting the ROAD appeal for underwear (new and sensible please) for Romania and members are currently collecting donations.

The AGM was completed by refreshments which included wonderful cakes from the committee, there was also a pass the parcel competition and a sing-along with Jill Spooner on Piano.

The WI were entertained by some bright and beautiful slides when Mr Leech came to talk about Garden Colour throughout the Year in April. The slides showed a feast of colour for 52 weeks of the year from fruits, foliage, stems and the flowers themselves and Mr Leech’s expansive knowledge of where and how to see such vistas made them all the more interesting.

Three members celebrated birthdays during the month and members were treated to a glass of wine and a piece of cake as it was Edna Burn’s 83rd birthday on the meeting night. The competition for a miniature flower arrangement was won by Jean Bradley with Cathy Mitcham 2nd. Cathy and Jenni Honisett were equal 1st in the flower of the month competition.
The darts team are enjoying their competitions but lost both matches at Whaplode Village WI The sport and leisure teams have been busy with two teams going to the quiz evening at Scredington and the table tennis / darts teams playing matches.

All members were given a schedule for the WI competitions at Lincolnshire Show in June and asked to enter what classes they can. Donations of Cakes and Craft Materials are also requested and stewards wanted for either day. The siting of the marquee has changed this year so be sure to seek us out.

The Institute had a display at the Annual Parish Meeting on 24th April and also a tombola at the village hall plant sale and spring fair which raised £130.

At the May meeting the resolution against the closure of local hospitals was debated and members voted unanimously in favour of the resolution which will go to the National AGM in June.

Following the business of the evening members were entertained by Nigel Creasey singing folk songs.

There are still a handful of vacancies for the trip to Sandringham on Wednesday 18th July. Cost, including coach and entrance fees to the house, garden and museum, is £14 for non-members. Please contact Audrey Webb is you would like to grab a seat (01526 322093) or would like any more information about joining WI.
