Metheringham WI Report Winter 2007
Metheringham WI were getting ahead with their preparations when Ann Barnes came to warn them that 'Christmas is A-coming' in September!. She had a wonderful array of ideas for displays involving wreaths, containers, real and artificial foliage and good smells and even told members how to dry oranges in the microwave. She insisted that no skill was required to produce any of the wonderful items she created.
During the business of the meeting President Audrey Webb said she had visited Peggy Wright on her 90th birthday to pass on the members' congratulations. In the competitions Emily won the raffle, Dot Howes won the competition for a hand-made tree decoration and Ronnie Wright won the flower of the month.
In October we were given an insight into small animal veterinary work by Sarah Williamson from Kirks Vets in Sleaford which explored the use of X-rays in the surgery and members got to stroke the guinea pig. The competition for best animal picture was won by Elsie Nind with Audrey Webb and Cynthia Dobbs in joint second place. Ronnie Wright won the flower of the month.
November's meeting saw and heard "A Windy Evening" with Tony Stephens giving a demonstration of various wind instruments and their history. The competition for an instrument was won by Elsie Nind with Jayne Palmer second and the flower of the month was won by Jenni Honisett. Members have also been out and about in the federation attending the 30th birthday celebration, that was 'rather dull'; the bowls afternoon that had been a great success with our team winning 12-4; a thoroughly enjoyed games night where Metheringham had also been very successful. Several members attended a Christmas Craft afternoon making pop up cards, pin cushions, boxes, wreaths and prick and stitch cards. The quiz teams also did well at the federation quiz with a reversal of fortunes and members also went 10-pin bowling and to the Kinema.
The red and white tombola at the Fayre and Feast raised £250 and the institute hosted a Table Top Sale in the village hall on 10 November which raised another £180. Members are getting into the Christmas spirit by visiting Doddington Hall on December 8th before the December meeting which will be a Christmas social……we hope. After last year's cancellation we are keeping fingers crossed.
After Christmas the table tennis and darts groups will get together to practise, another 10-pin bowling afternoon is organised and there will be changes to our meeting venue. There are more federation events to keep members busy and expanding their horizons, learning new skills and meeting new friends.
