Metheringham FC - Spring 08 Update

For Metheringham Football Club this season has fairly flown by as we move into the last two months of this campaign. At the present time none of our sides hold top spot in their league's but saying that the teams within the club are generally doing very well. Of our 13 sides two are presently in second place, namely the U18's and U15's, two are third (U12's and U9's), two are fourth (Sun 1st and U11's) and four are fifth (Sun 2nd, U16's, U13's and U10's). Whether any of these side will finish in top spot is, to a certain extent, in their own hands. Whilst we have sides battling out league titles just one side is left in cup competition with the Sunday 1st XI in the Kelly Read Cup ΒΌ final, open to village sides, where they host Division One side Nettleham. The nearest any of our sides have came to a cup final was the Saturday XI who went out to Plough FC Skellingthorpe in the semi final of the Amateur Cup, going down 5-3 after extra time, having twice been in the lead.

The Club continues to see players banging in the goals with Under 12's striker, Ridwan Sadi again the club's leading scorer with 46 goals to his name this season in only 20 games. He has now scored 153 goals in just 43 games for the club, in two seasons. Two brothers who look like being goal-scoring machines for the club are Harry and Jac Wright. Harry, in his second season with the club has scored 31 goals in 18 games for the U10's while Jac, who plays for the U13's, has scored 31 in 21 games and a fantastic 123 in 94 games for the club. Another player to have hit over twenty goals this season is Under 15's midfield player Elliot Ward who has netted 27 in 11 games, including six in his last match. U18's striker Tony Sewell has netted 20 in 17 games while the U9's have three prolific scorers in their team. Matt Whitehouse is their leading scorer with 25 goals from 18 games, Ben Mearns 20 from 18 and Cameron Alcock 18 from 18. Their team are their league's top scorers with over 70 goals from only 16 games.

Off the field the club continue to raise necessary funds and last November we joined company with the Village Hall Committee to hold a Race Night which proved financially rewarding for both organisations. A further Race Night is also scheduled on Friday 4 April, the eve of the Grand National. This event is in company with the Bowls Club and will be held in the Star and Garter, starting around 8.30 pm. Anyone is welcome to come along and if you want a "Horse" just contact Pete Ford (01526 320016) or Dawn Smith (01526 320502).

Whilst talking of fund-raising, the club is once again looking to hold a Fun Day but this year we are welcoming all local organisations to join us. This will be held on Sunday 1st June. A meeting is to be held in March for all interested group (see page 19 for further information). Last year the Battle of Britain Lancaster flew over the village and was enjoyed by all so we are trying to again arrange for its return. We are giving groups the chance to raise money so come along and join us in this community event.

In closing and on behalf of the committee and 200 or so players, ranging now from as young as 5 years of age the club wish to express sincere thanks to all its sponsors, helpers and parents who once again have showed us great support this season.
Thank you
Pete Ford (Hon Sec)

Metheringham Football Club - Bingo Sessions

Metheringham FC has held fortnightly Bingo Sessions in the Village Hall for nearly half a century. In days gone by it was not unexpected to see around 90-100 people at every session. Unfortunately numbers have been dropping steadily over the years and recently there have been no more than 40. With the cost of hiring the hall and other overheads this is making the event less and less profit worthy.

Also the people who help ever week are not getting any younger as they have been involved for much of the last 50 years. The club is conscious of the fact that the holding of this event is not only important to ourselves but does provide a community outlet for local people. We are presently evaluating our position but if numbers have not improved sufficiently by Easter we might have to call it a day.

If you do not want to see Bingo come to an end please come back and support us. Thanks

Pete Ford (Club Sec).
