Metheringham WI - Spring 2008 Update
The big news is that the WI membership has now increased in numbers to the point that we have decided to move to the village hall. This will make parking much easier as well as provide more space for speakers, competitions, displays etc. The institute would like to thank the Methodist Church for the use of their hall and their hospitality and generosity over recent years and hope they understand that our expanding membership means we feel it is time to try somewhere different and is no reflection on their hospitality.
Our first meeting on February 20th went very well with Debbie Sutton telling members about Decorative Folk Art Painting its' history and how it varies throughout the world. Members all had a go at using some of the techniques on a gift card. The competition for a hand decorated ornament was won by Moira Sturdy, Angela Harvey and Jayne Palmer. The flower of the month was won by Shirley Maddison and Moira. Dot Howes and Shirley Maddison won the raffle. Members are already looking ahead to Lincolnshire Show and planning the Co-Operative entry and names are being taken for the outing to Castle Howard in July. The president also announced the death of our oldest member Peggy Wright on 2nd February. Peggy had formerly been a member of Scopwick WI and will be sadly missed by all who knew her.
In December we enjoyed a jolly, social evening of fun, food and festivities. There were two quiz games - match the child photo to the member and guess the high street shop, music and each member brought some food. After the buffet members enjoyed some carol singing before heading out into the fog with headwear flashing. There were prizes, a raffle and Santa's Sack so no-one went home empty handed.
In January 33 members enjoyed a very tasty dinner at Blankney Golf Club where we were made most welcome. Places were picked out of a hat so most members got to chat to someone different and make a new friend(s) or find out more in common with someone they thought they already knew.
March is a busy month. We have 2 teams in a federation quiz at Leasingham on the 7th. The federation Spring Council meeting is on March 11th at Springfields, Spalding where the main speaker will be Ann Widdecombe. On the 12th The Phoenix group of institutes meet at Leadenham and the following Wednesday (19th) we will be presenting the competition trophies and electing a new committee and officers at our Annual Meeting. Ten Pin bowling has been arranged on 31st March at Lincoln. Other members are also involved in table tennis and darts and occasional visits to the Kinema in the Woods and the theatre.
If you are interested in coming along to join in the friendship, fellowship and fun and the benefits and opportunities that being a WI member brings, please come along to our meetings on the third Wednesday of the month at 7.15p.m. in the Village Hall or give Audrey a call on 01526 322093.
