Eileen Holvey 1925 - 2009
Tribute to Eileen Holvey who tragically died following an accident near Nocton - Quote from Eileen's son Ian Holvey of Potterhanworth on behalf of all the family.
Eileen Elsie Holvey (nee Turner) bn 28.9.1925 the only daughter of the late Harry and Edith Turner.
Mum was born in Ledbury, Herefordshire and moved to the Blankney Hunt Kennels on 1 May 1937. She later met her husband Horace Holvey (84yrs) who also lived in Blankney.
As a family we will be eternally grateful that she always taught us right from wrong and it is impossible to describe the void that will be left in all of our lives due to this tragic incident.
Mum's teenage years were spent during the Second World War and she had many tales to tell about this difficult time. She would tell us of how the skies would be black with the bombers from nearby airfields and would always make sure that we all knew the debt that we owed to those that flew in them and also to our serviceman of today.
She was a very patriotic lady who was very appreciative of the sacrifices many had given to enable her to bring up her family in peace. As far as we are aware she has never missed watching the Remembrance Day Service on television.
She attended school at the St Joseph's Convent, Lincoln and was still a respected member of the 'Old Girls Association'.
In her younger days Mum was a keen sportswoman particularly enjoying tennis, horse riding and golf. She was an avid watcher of all sport on television especially football, golf, cricket and tennis.
She was born into hunting, her father Harry Turner being huntsman of the Blankney Foxhounds from 1937 - 1949 and her support for hunting never waned. She was treasurer of the Blankney Hunt Supporters Club for many years and was still to be seen at local meets.
Mum married her loving husband Horace on 28 September 1949 and they would have celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary this year - the plans for which were already in motion as she loved a party. She was particularly looking forward to receiving their telegram from The Queen.
She was well known locally having lived nearly all of her life in the area. However she always had a particular affinity with the village of Blankney which she always considered as 'home' and her birthplace of Ledbury.
Mum worked at RAF Nocton Hall Hospital for many years in the orthopaedic department. She later helped Horace run a successful building and decorating business until they took a well deserved retirement 14 years ago at the age of 70 years old.
Since retiring she has lived life to the full, she particularly loved travelling with Spain being one of her favourite destinations (They were due to go out to Spain on 4th Oct for a month to celebrate 60 years of marriage!) She loved going out for meals and did this at least twice a week.
She was a very sprightly and fit 83 year old who was looking forward to many more years with her family and particularly the births of two more great grandchildren who are due shortly.
Eileen was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother and will be sadly missed by us and all who knew her.
As a family we would like to thank everyone who has expressed their sympathy and support including those who have enquired about Dad, who following initial treatment in the Queen's Medical Centre at Nottingham is now making slow progress in Lincoln County Hospital."
