Also for the more active there will be a History Walk "Stepping Through Time in Metheringham" organised by Countryside NK to celebrate the launch of the village's newly revised and updated history leaflet.
The walk will begin in the Village Hall Car Park at 10.30a.m.
Metheringham WI will be meeting on Wednesday 19th May in the village hall at 7.15p.m. May is always the Resolutions meeting when members discuss and vote on the resolutions being taken to the NFWI Annual General Meeting at Cardiff in June. This year the proposal is for the mandatory clear labelling of food with true country of origin.
Following the Metheringham vote Dave Skepper will be talking about "Stagecoach". The competition is for something beginning with "C".
The Silver Sounds brass band are approaching the coming season with added confidence now they have been able to update their image thanks to new funding. After entertaining the audience at the Annual Village meeting with the Ivanhoe March, The Adventurer, Silver Trumpet and Zambezi the band's spokesman, Sam Palmer, said how grateful the band were to have been awarded grants, one from Grass Roots to help with uniforms and a banner and other local funding to purchase a gazebo to use at outdoor events. The band aims to push youngsters to improve their skills and to encourage new players. A summer school is planned which will shortly be publicised locally. The band is also promoting itself in local schools as well as through its' public performances.
Metheringham Fire and Rescue had 5 representatives from the local Retained Station at the Annual Parish Meeting in April. They spoke about who they are, what they do and how things have changed. Roy Darwood and Pete Leggett have both been in the fire service for 26 years and have seen many changes in the standards of equipment and training now given to retained personnel and the role of the station and fire fighters. Even Will Wright in his "nearly 4 years" at the station has seen 3 different appliances and 2 changes of uniform. Paul Stalybrass explained how the role nowadays is more focused on prevention and education and they are always looking for more new recruits to join. Community groups of all ages are all welcome to come and look round the station and try out the equipment and officers can advise on smoke alarms and hazard awareness.
There were 94 turnouts in the 2009/10 year including 36 fires, 18 Road Traffic incidents and including assistance for flooding and other emergencies.
MADSPA ( Metheringham and District Swimming Pool Association) are in their pre-season preparation phase and are looking for any volunteers to help with the maintenenace jobs needed. Pool representative Dian Robinson spoke at the Annual Village Meeting on April 27th to reiterate how the pool needs more help from people to do jobs at the pool and more support for its' fundraising activities if the pool if going to be run efficiently for the benefit of everyone in the area. Sessions this summer will include ordinary swims, senior citizens and ladies only sessions, children's lessons, Rookie lifeguard training, party hire.
She thanked those who had helped with grass mowing and the fire service for coming out to train at the pool and also to remove the picnic tables which had been moved when the pool froze over. Maintenance of the boiler and its associated bits is a never ending job and this time it is the motor that has stopped. Help is always appreciated from skilled electricians, plumbers, garden maintenance people etc. Further information is available from Dian on 07932 520362
