Red Lion Dunston FC 2009/2010 review

Life playing for Dunston is never straight forward, firstly with our Division 6 side having to play in Division 2 after having to disband one team. This subsequently led to relegation into Lincoln's Sunday League 4, and so it begins.

With the same old faces turning out for pre-season, the season still started off full of hope, however the first game soon made us realise what a long season it was going to be, going down 8-0, away to Tennyson FC.

With the Christmas period upon us and with only one win and a draw to our name the Lions were rock bottom. However after what can only be deemed as a moment of madness, one of our seasoned campaigners and normally a wise old head, came out with the immortal words on Christmas Eve of 'we're to good to go down'.

Sure enough, at the beginning of the new year, an up turn of fortunes and the crucial signing of new striker Ben Morgan and the ever reliable Jason Caller, performing heroics in goal, the first three games in January yielded two wins and a draw. The team went on to win a further two games and also draw two games. Going into the last match of the season we needed a point to move out of the relegation zone, unfortunately it was not to be and we finished second to bottom on goal difference.

The team would like to thank John and his staff at the Red Lion for all their support during the season in providing food for every home game.

The season finally ended with the annual charity game against Metheringham on FA cup final day, with a mix of young and old for both teams. The game turned out to be a most exciting affair and the result in doubt right until the very final kick. A penalty each during the game, for the respective "ageless, managers, Glyn Jones and Dave Atkin, showed the younger players how a "spot kick" should be taken! In the end the Red Lion, after being 4-3 down at half time, were the victors by the skin of their teeth, 6-5, but this was not before Nigel Beck missed a penalty for Meg with two minutes to go (was it a miss or was it a superb save by Robbie Cox in the Lion goal!). This meant the trophy was going to Dunston for the first time in the fours years they have played this fixture.

Both sets of teams would like to thank everyone who donated money (totalling £170) to the chosen charity on the day, the St Barnabice Hospice in Lincoln and to the Star and Garter for providing the food.

Finally training for the new season will commence in July and new players are always welcome at this friendly village pub team.
