Metheringham School News Autumn 2010

We used to say that the summer terms in school were the busiest and although this is still the case, the other terms are catching up and becoming as full, active and exciting. We have all been kept occupied with school events and with the continuing extended schools activities that have been arranged.

Our school choir joined 13 other local schools to form a 300 strong Cluster Choir. After practices in school and at Branston Community College, the choir put on an outstanding performance at Lincoln Cathedral on 23 June. A standing ovation came from a very proud audience of parents, family members, friends and local authority representatives who attended this wonderful event.

Some of our Year 3 pupils spent time working at Lincoln University with the Siren FM radio team producing a radio broadcast entitled 'It's Cool to be at School'. Pupils not attending the university sessions, spent time in school as 'roving reporters' collecting information and interviewing pupils, parents and grandparents about their time at school. The broadcast went out on Siren FM in July much to the delight of our young reporters and production team.

We have bid farewell to our 32 Year 6 pupils who are now moving on to six different senior schools. The Year 6 pupils and their parents and carers attended a leavers' assembly on the last day of term where photographs and stories were shared of the children's memories of Metheringham Primary School. We are sorry to see our Year 6 pupils leave and we wish them every success and happiness in the future.

We have been kept very busy with educational visits this term. The Butterfly and Wildlife Farm was the venue for the Reception class visit. Key Stage 1 pupils visited Lincolnshire Life Museum and Belton House to help them with their topic on houses and homes. Lower Key Stage 2 went to Twycross Zoo to enjoy the animals but also to look at caging structures to help them with their design project on dinosaurs. Upper Key Stage 2 paid a visit to Lincoln Theatre Royal to watch Roald Dahl's George's Marvellous Medicine. The Year 5 pupils have visited some of the local senior schools for taster sessions to help them make a choice about their future schools and our Year 6 pupils attended the induction days at their new schools.

The sun shone for us all on sports day and both the Early Years sports and Key Stage 2 sports went ahead as planned. Early Years also managed to fit in an additional Fun Sports afternoon to complement our competitive sports day and to give pupils more opportunities to enjoy being active and to participate in team sports.

Our Upper Key Stage 2 pupils put on a performance of Jack and the Beanstalk for parents, carers, pupils and the over 60's group. Once again some budding actors and actresses were identified and their performances were of a high standard. Daisy the dancing cow kept everyone entertained and the giant brought fear to everyone in the audience. The magic beanstalk that grew from the hall floor still has our younger pupils questioning how this could have happened.

The year ended with the Friends of Metheringham School (FOMS) group organising an excellent summer fair. Silver Sounds Band, Angels Dance Troupe and the fire brigade were all on hand to keep us entertained throughout the afternoon. FOMS also arranged an end of year 'Idols' disco for our pupils to enjoy.

We hope that everyone has a wonderful summer and we are looking forward to starting the next school year and welcoming our 39 new Reception pupils.

Elspeth McMenemie Headteacher.
