Metheringham WI Update Autumn 2010
Four MACLA Magazines a year, the summer issue on the streets and now writing the autumn report. No grumbles really, according to our members, who find it useful and informative. Sadly, just another year disappearing faster and faster with winter just around the corner.
Metheringham WI has now reached a milestone of 50 members.
The highlight of the summer was our outing to Holkham Hall. The tour of the house provided shelter from the sudden downpours. The Bygone Exhibition brought back memories: farm tools - when all tasks were done by hand. Domestic appliances - the drudgery of housework! - thank goodness for washing machines and vacuum cleaners. The Hall was surrounded by parkland overlooking a lake. The day concluded with a visit to Wells.
May - Members voted unanimously for the resolution to go to Annual Conference "All food was to be clearly labelled with the country of origin and be ethically produced".
Also one of our members gave a very interesting talk about running a Soho Club. The majority of people working in them were there due to economic circumstances.
June - Nigel Creasey stepped in at last minute to play a mixture of Folk Songs on the guitar. There was also a tambour player and singer.
July - This meeting was a talk show with slides about the life of Beatrix Potter. Everyone remembers her books from childhood. Many of us had seen the film. She was a conservationist who used her wealth to help upkeep the countryside around her home - Hill Top Farm in the Lakes.
Thanks once again to Jean and David Simpson for hosting the Strawberry Tea. The weather could have been better but it was an enjoyable afternoon.
There have been bowling outings, gold days and now members are working for The Make, Bake and Show, to be held at Hubberts Bridge on Saturday 30 October.
Our August Meeting, which we will report on it in the next issue, was on memories of the 50s / 60s and 70s by Tony Richards
