News from MADSPA Autumn 2010
Another swimming season is fast coming to an end for Metheringham & District Swimming Pool Association and we would just like to recap on what has been happening. Our main task at the start of the season was to change the sand in the filter bed, a very long and laborious task. Then there was the need to get the motor re-wired, with thanks to the Parish Council for their help with this expense. We had not been able to get the water to clear completely because the sand was worn and dirty. Many thanks to Carl for the hours spent moving ½ ton of sand and gravel through a ten inch hole and replacing it with new. Thanks also to all those who helped pre-season with the painting and gardening, particularly the Scouts, who gained their community badges. They were a real help but that said, it will be a while before we let them loose with a tin of paint in their bedrooms.
The swimming season started well with beautiful weather in early June and we managed to find a new swimming teacher, Richard, who has a distinct method of teaching. It is very effective with the novices and demonstrates stroke improvement to the older.
Volunteers are still needed to help with general weekly cleaning and refreshment sales and it will be "all hands to the deck" at the close of the season in September.
We have several projects for the winter months:
a) water on tap to the main shed with a sink unit and drainage (the unit could be a cast-off!)
b) water on tap to the boiler room with a sluice and drainage and a gulley leading to a soak-away on the floor (it is not a good idea to stand in a puddle and play with electricity).
c) strip the changing room floor (again) with an industrial grinder and repaint.
d) erect more permanent shelters for non-swimmers on the lines of garden pergola, but with a plastic roof.
e) Finish the hedge cutting where the mechanical cutter could not reach. It will need scaffolding.
f) Remove, clean and relay some of the overhanging poolside slabs.
If you can offer any help with any of these, please ring Dian (321581) Anne (321175) or speak to Kerri Hawbrook, Maggie and Lyn (ex Star & Garter) or Shirley (ex-postie). We are pleased to welcome Maggie, Lyn and Kerri onto the committee, who have lots of fund-raising ideas.

On a Date (to be decided) in December, at the Old Post Office, courtesy of Maggie & family - Sherry & Mince Pies. See the house in all its Christmas Finery.
Finally we are looking for a person for next season, who would be willing to visit the pool twice a day and carry out chemical checks, learn how to solve problems and understand the complexities of the heating and filtering system. This is currently undertaken by Dian. Training is available through North Kesteven District Council or a Grantham based company.

Hi Diana
A southerner on your site! which I've much enjoyed. We swim at the Tooting Lido and I've also volunteered to investigate examples of council / volunteer group alliances to run public access facilities.
Reading through the volunteer calls gives a good sense of your requirements from just reading but if we wanted to pursue could I call on you for more information please if we wanted to pursue? The volunteer aspect running the service for the community is of primary interest but any financial insight would be good too.
Robert
