Metheringham Primary School News Winter 2010

Our 38 new Reception class pupils have now settled into school and are being well supported by Miss Meyerhoff, Mrs Flintham, Mrs Thackray and Mrs Lawford. They, along with some of their Year 1 classmates, have visited the local fire station and post office in the village.

The Harvest assembly took place in school at the end of September. Our new Reception parents were invited to attend and all pupils took part in the celebrations. Harvest donations were sent to the New Life Church Community Larder.

Once again the school held a themed week on the Expressive Arts. Pupils spent time working on a large piece of collective 3D art work which will be displayed in the school hall. Classes worked on art work based on the theme of 'friendship' to decorate their class cloakrooms. We were also entertained by members of the Dunston Silver Sounds Band who, along with some of their members who are pupils at our school, led an excellent assembly that saw our pupils participating in playing some of the instruments that they brought along.

In September pupils from Mr Bell's and Mrs Jones' classes visited the Upware Centre in Cambridgeshire as part of their learning about Roman Britain. Here, the children and adults were able to take part in dressing up as Roman soldiers and learn Roman crafts such as mosaics and cookery. They also had the opportunity to learn about Roman Upware through an exciting treasure hunt and uncovering clues.

Recently, Upper Key Stage Two had the opportunity to learn about the night sky and the science related to the Earth, Sun and Moon in a very special way. The children thoroughly enjoyed entering the mobile Planetarium and watching special effects and projected images of the constellations and the planets surrounding them. Excellent explanations were provided by the visiting speaker which supported the children's learning in a way that could not have been achieved in a classroom environment.

Our Year 1 and Year 2 pupils in Miss Lockett's and Mr Wall's classes invited parents to their Healthy Food Cafe. Pupils spent time designing menus and preparing food for the cafe. Not a crumb was left by the end so we can assume that a good experience was had by all! Our Year 2 pupils are now working with Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership on road safety training and they are being supported by staff and a group of parents in this training.

We are all now looking forward to Christmas and all of the excitement that this brings. The diary is full with our Christmas Fair kicking off events on the 2 December. We then have our Infant plays, talent competitions, carol service, pantomime and Christmas parties to enjoy.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to everyone from us all.

Elspeth McMenemie - Head Teacher.
