Scopwick Parish Council News Winter 2010

Following the refurbishment the Village Hall is attracting both more regular and occasional users. This will increase even further when the anticipated approval is received from the Licensing Authorities to allow a much larger number of bookings than currently agreed. Bookings are already being taken for private events into 2012.

Currently preparation is under way in theVillage Hall for the Annual Christmas Bazaar that will take place from 2.00pm on Saturday 11 December, when many stalls to sell local products of all sorts, will be available, along with attractions suitable to entertain the children. The Bazaar will be followed at 4.30pm by a Children's Concert where, in addition to a variety of acts, seasonal refreshments will be available.

Scopwick and Kirkby Green are small communities where people like to live - witness the 8 new houses currently under construction in Scopwick and the Planning Applications under consideration for further conversion of farm buildings into residential properties.

There is, however, always general maintenance work that needs to be done and which occupies a good part of the Parish Council time.

Work has been completed to make the wooden bridge at the end of Beckside safe - just in time to be crossed by the hundreds of energetic participants in the Spires and Steeples event that passed though the village on the way to the finish line in Sleaford.
Community Payback did a good job repainting the inside of the Village Hall after the recent refurbishment and a number of further projects have been submitted by the Council to see if labour can be allocated during the winter months to improve and enhance the environment throughout the Parish.

Damage due to the recent high winds and rain has been surprisingly light though there are some trees down that will be cleared away as soon as possible. Also work is under way to identify suitable replacement and additional memorial trees along Beckside.

The Council has a duty to try and provide allotments if there is sufficient demand and for the last 18 months efforts have been made to find a suitable piece of ground to use. This has been difficult because Scopwick, unlike some other Parish Councils, owns no land other than small scraps unsuitable for use other than as green space. However, Blankney Estates now have identified and generously offered a plot that could be used for a small number of allotments. This would be a major undertaking for a Parish such as ours to establish and maintain such a site properly. A fundamental consideration is how many local people are genuinely interested. Review of the original list of applicants has revealed that, except for a couple of really enthusiastic people, the remainder have withdrawn on having realised just what a continuing commitment is required through the seasons and the years necessary to gain full benefit from an allotment. If there are such committed people in the Parish then they should contact the Clerk.
