The farmers behind a bid to build a 'super dairy' in Lincolnshire have confirmed they have abandoned their plans. Nocton Dairies Ltd withdrew an application for a 3,770 cow dairy on Nocton Heath in February following concerns from the Environment Agency. On Thursday directors David Barnes and Peter Willes issued a statement saying they had no further plans for a dairy.

The statement said arable farming will continue on the land, near Lincoln.
Nocton Dairies Ltd had originally wanted to house about 8,000 animals on the site but halved the number after pressure from welfare, environmental and local groups.
'No further application'

But the Environment Agency said it still had concerns about the effect the dairy may have on ground water quality nearby and North Kesteven District Council indicated it would refuse the application and refer it to the government.

After withdrawing the plans Mr Barnes and Mr Willes said they were taking time to consider their options and would not be selling the land. The directors' statement said: "When the application for the dairy was withdrawn, we did not know what the next steps would be, there was no Plan "B".
"Since then we have had further meetings with the Environment Agency and council to find out what the options are.
"While none of us knows how circumstances or technology might change in the future, we can confidently say that there is no intention to submit any further application for a dairy farm on the heath."

Swimming - a life skill

Ever wanted to learn to swim, but never got round to it? City of Lincoln Pentaqua Swimming Club offers a learn to swim programme for swimmers aged from 4 to 104. Pentaqua is a Swim 21 accredited club and has a reputation for nurturing and guiding swimmers to achieve their full potential, whether that be being able to swim, or even aspiring Olympians.

In addition to learn to swim, training sessions and support are available for those who want to take their swimming to the next level and compete as Pentaqua's swimmers are seen at competitions throughout the Midlands. These sessions are great for developing fitness levels further through a planned programme of training coached by qualified and professional staff.

Pentaqua's Learn to Swim programme for younger swimmers takes place at NK and Yarborough Leisure Centres, and the adults only Learn to Swim programme takes place at Lincoln Christ's Hospital School pool.

Notice is given that Metheringham Village Hall Management Committee
will be holding its' Annual General Meeting on Tuesday 12th April 2011
at 7.30p.m. in the Village Hall. This meeting is open to the public.
Any groups not currently represented on the committee are invited to

Dino-Mite is taking place in Metheringham Library on Tuesday 19th
April. Stomp in the Dinosaur Swamp and make your own dinosaur egg or
mask. The event which takes place between 11.00a.m. and 12.15 is
suitable for 5-11 year olds and will cost £1 per child. To book a place
speak to the library staff or phone 01522 782010.

Metheringham WI held their Annual General Meeting in the village hall
on Wednesday 16th March. There were no new nominations for the
committee and no members stepped down. Audrey Webb was reappointed as
President. Joan Reynolds was presented with a photo of her receiving
the trophy for highest darts score in the federation darts league.

The glass bowl for the member with the highest 10- Pin bowling score
went to Adele Riddell who scored 181. the new season begins in
April/May. The Competitions trophy went to Mary Goddard with Jenni
Honisett and Jean Bradley in second and third places. Audrey Webb won
the flower of the month trophy and Jenni Honisett and Shirley Maddison
were equal second. The overall trophy was won by Mary Goddard with 88
points. Following the business of the meeting 12 rounds of bag beetle
caused much noise and hilarity in the hall with the overall winner
being Adele Riddell and Ronnie wright was runner up.

The next meeting will be a talk on "Clarice Cliff" by Gerry Burrows
on Wednesday 20th April at 7.15p.m. in the village hall. Visitors are
welcome and the £1.50 includes refreshments and raffle entry.

There will be a 50:50 Auction on Saturday March 26th 2011 in Metheringham Village Hall. Viewing from 8.00a.m. and first lot under the hammer at 10.00a.m. Items to go in the sale should be delivered to the hall between 5.30 and 7.30p.m. on Friday 25th March. 50% of the payment received for goods sold will be returned (unless a 100%
donation to the hall is specified.) Payments will be made at the end of the auction which will be limited to 150 lots and a limit of 5 lots per person or organisation. There is no collection or delivery service and large bulky items may not be accepted. Electrical items sold "as seen". No clothing or shoes. Refreshments will be available.

Metheringham WI holds its' 2011 Annual General Meeting on Wednesday 16th March at 7.15p.m. in the village hall. Visitors are welcome for £1.50 which includes refreshments.

There will be a Fashion Show in Metheringham Village Hall on Wednesday 23rd March 2011 at 7.30p.m. The clothes will be presented by Lincs Fashion and tickets are £2.50 available from D & K news or on 07900 915191. The POD will be visiting Metheringham on Fridays 18th and 25th March and the 1st and 8th April between 2.30 and 5.30 and 6-8p.m. The mobile youth and play facility is open to anyone between 0-16 years ( under 8s to be accompanied by an adult) and offers digital games, Nintendo Wii, Music, Arts and Crafts activities or just the chance to "chill". (1) Apologies for Absence: District Councillor P. Rose and County Councillor M. Overton.

(2) Police: PCSO Duckworth informed the meeting that no crime had been reported since the last meeting. There had been a little activity around Nocton Hall with the security fence being damaged. LEDA had been informed and they had arranged repairs. Complaint of noise from a motor vehicle and a motor scooter on Nocton Park Road investigated and resolved, the only option left was to contact the Environment Department at North Kesteven District Council.

(3) Public Questions:

Trees are still obscuring the highway between the corner opposite Manor Farm and 1 Potterhanworth Road. The Clerk to contact Lincolnshire CC Highways again. The roads were swept yesterday but straw dislodged from lorries on the highway again today. The Clerk to ask LCC Highways if the trees by the Hall gates can be trimmed.

(4) Litter: Mr. Sidney said that he had picked up several bags of dog faeces on Rostrop Road.

(5) Dog Warden: Mrs Hill gave her report. She will patrol Rostrop Road.

(6) Declaration of Prejudicial Interest in Accordance with the Ethical Code of Conduct: Councillors I. Goldsworthy, M. Williams and D. Wilson declared a personal interest in the Nocton Dairy item.

(7) Minutes: The Minutes of the meeting held on 11th January 2011 were proposed as correct by Councillor Tyler, seconded by Councillor Askew and signed by the Chair.

(8) Matters Arising:

154/10 (see 136/10): Play area - The Clerk has drafted a letter to the school governors explaining that the play area is only as previously agreed.
155/10 (see 137/10): Village Hall settlement - Councillor Williams has contacted Community Lincs. There could be funding available and she has arranged to meet at the Village Hall with their representative at 10.00 a.m. on Tuesday.
156/10 (see 138/10): Councillor Williams had contacted Boddingtons and obtained samples of surfacing for The Green - £10 and £30 per square metre. Councillors favoured the sample at £10 per square metre. Councillor Williams to measure the amount required. The Clerk to show sample to the School and the Church and to ask if they would be willing to share in the cost.
157/10 (see 139/10): Parish Plan - Suggested that a village meeting be arranged for 23rd March when Janet Clarke from NKDC could explain the details. All village organisations to be invited.
158/10 (see 140/10): BJB have inspected the "Coronation Seat" and in their opinion it would be unsafe to repair again. Suggested that the back of the bench containing the plaque be retained and placed elsewhere. This was agreed. It was proposed by Councillor Askew, seconded by Councillor Goldsworthy that the "Cluster" seat be sited in its place.
159/10 (see 141/10): Equal Opportunities - Councillor Goldsworthy again proposed that this item be removed from as a standing item on each agenda but instead be reviewed annually at the Annual General Meeting. Seconded by Councillor Tyler and agreed unanimously.

The Public Meeting comments had been sent. Thanks were recorded to Dr E. Murray for her excellent chairing of the public meeting.

Mr Ward has written to NKDC objecting to the Dairy and the Effluent Pipeline.

Mr Willes has stated that the effluent would be transported in the beginning by tanker. Nocton Fen road is not capable of taking tanker traffic - the highway is a single lane with sharp bends and a fragile bridge. Many of the plans submitted are against NKDC's Planning Strategy. All comments are put onto the NKDC planning website but do officers look at them? There is a team of people going through them. Any judicial review would take into account all of NKDC's procedures on this application. 16,000 plus comments had been received to date. The Chair is to meet with the Chairman of Dunston Parish Council to formulate comments to present to the Planning Committee meeting.

(15) Any Other Business (167/10):

(a) Councillor Askew reported that the Cricket Club will be repaying the loan at the end of February.
(b) Councillor Goldsworthy said that the kerb by the back entry to the Post Office had been marked for work several months ago but nothing has been done. The surface of Wellhead Lane was also in a bad state again. Councillor Goldsworthy to report these matters to LCC Highways Department.
(c) Councillor Williams had attended the Cluster meeting on 19th January where composting, Community Payback and empty homes were discussed. There are 700 empty homes in North Kesteven and 46 in this cluster. The coming census was discussed. There will be help available for people to complete the forms and Councillor Williams agreed to organise a suitable event for residents in early March.
The next Cluster Meeting is on 14th April 2011 in Potterhanworth.
(d) The Chair will contact Roger Hall to co-ordinate the presentation to the Planning Committee.
(e) Councillor Wilson is willing to continue as Chair until the elections in May but needs a Vice-Chair. Councillor Tyler nominated Councillor Goldsworthy; this was seconded by Councillor Rumbelow and as there were no other nominations Councillor Goldsworthy was appointed Vice-Chair.
(f) Communication of correspondence received by the Clerk discussed. As much as possible by email was proposed.

(16) Date of Next Meeting:

The next meeting confirmed as Tuesday, 1st March 2011 at 7pm in the Village Hall.

Firstly I have to make a huge apology to all those of you who were late in receiving your Winter Issue of the magazine. Every effort had been made to get the magazine out by the end of November and everything was on track until we had the untimely winter weather. This made it almost impossible for some of our volunteer deliverers to go out in safety. The lateness of the deliver also had a knock on effect as we had included an information leaflet in relation to the proposed Nocton Dairy planning application and an impending meeting in early December and again we can only offer our apologies.

A short history of Nocton Estate Light Railway

Back in the late 1800's the owner of Nocton Hall, Lord Ripon urged a friend, George Hodgson (then Chairman of the Yorkshire Bank Co) to use his influence in pressing for the opening of a railway line linking Lincoln with Sleaford. The line was opened on 1st August 1882 with Nocton and Dunston sharing a "new" station which would see passenger trains stop here until the station was closed forever in 1955. But... this was not to be the only railway system that would be an integral part of life in this thriving community.

In 1889-90 Lord Ripon sold the hall and estate to his great friend George Hodgson and he and his descendants ran the community for almost 30 years. It was the last of the Hodgson family, Norman, who passed the hall into the hands of the Americans as a convalescent home for commissioned soldiers in 1917, during WW1. Norman Hodgson and his family, having vacated the hall, took up residence at Embsay House on the outskirts of the village but then at the end of 1919 he decided to sell the hall and estate to Messrs W H Dennis. Up to then much, if not most of Nocton estate, had been farmed by tenant farmers for almost a century and a half, as they gave their loyal support to the lords of the manor.

Mr W.H. Dennis, however, had different ideas on the farming policies of his land and one by one the 26 tenant farmers were given notice to quit so he could manage the entire land himself. Systematically, farm houses on the estate, from the edge of the Lincoln Heath to the Fens, were to be left empty and then in time totally demolished, changing the idyllic Lincolnshire countryside forever. Mr Dennis's actions continued to make him less than popular in the community as woods and hedgerows too were cleared as he increased his arable land to some 8,000 acres, to become one of the major producers of beet, potatoes, wheat and barley in the country. The fact that Nocton Station was on his doorstep was a great advantage to him as his produce could be transported to all points from here.

A problem which became paramount to him however, was the movement of the produce from his land to the railhead but his Estate manager, Major Webber, came up with an inspirational idea of creating a railway system across his land (possibly the first such system in the country). Major Webber, no doubt, got the idea from the actions of the British Army during the Great War, who used a narrow gauge railway system to transport troops and supplies to the front line in the trenches of France.

Sections of this self same narrow gauge line became available from an Army Surplus Depot in Arras, France in 1921 and Mr Dennis quickly made his purchase. Initially just 4 miles of track (1 foot 11 and a half inch gauge) were laid in the low lying fenland to the east of Wasp's Nest but because it was such a success the Nocton Estate Light Railway (N.E.L.R.) system was gradually connected to the railhead, adjacent to the Lincoln to Sleaford railway line and in some places its evidence can still be seen to this day.

Allotments - Metheringham
Following consultation with the residents of Blacksmith Court, The Chase and the north end of Shiregate, there were mixed views on the proposal to turn the tree strip and grass open space into allotments. In the main, most residents were concerned about the closure of the footpath. It has therefore been agreed in principle that the Parish Council should take ownership of the land, leaving a small strip of trees adjacent to all the properties. From the area where the trees are removed we will then see if it is practical to create an additional area for allotments. The footpath and a large area of the grass will also remain, with the latter being made into a picnic area and a small car park provided adjacent to Dunston Road.

Annual Village Meeting
The 2011 Annual Village meeting will take place on Tuesday 19 April starting at 7.00pm in the Village Hall. This is not a formal Parish Council meeting but a meeting for the residents of Metheringham. The Chairman will give a short report on the activities of the Parish Council over the last financial year and leaders of the various working groups will advise people of actions carried out during the year. This year the invited guests are the Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership. There will be free refreshments during the evening and also the opportunity to view the exhibits and socialize with the speakers and parishioners. We wish to apologise to everyone for the cancellation of Santa and his visit to Metheringham. The bad weather we had during December caused havoc for everyone and Santa was no exception. We are sorry for any disappointment caused and have booked him again for this coming year and hope the bad weather will not disrupt him again.

The station has a new recruit who, after finally completing an intensive training course, has joined the crew "On the Run". Fire Fighter, Richard Doughty, lives in Dunston and joined Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue last September and has already attended several incidents and is gaining valuable "on the ground" experience and is proving to be a valued team member.

Another new recruit has also started his training at Lincoln Training Centre and will shortly be joining the crew at Metheringham. We have several other people who are at present going through the selection and medical process and will hopefully be with us shortly. The training that new recruits receive is very intense and involves Fire Fighting techniques, BA Training, RTC Training, and Basic First Aid, all of which prepare fire fighters for any eventual incidents. Further Training then continues during employment and experience received on incidents.

Census Day is Sunday 27 March 2011

The last census was 2001 and the figures used for calculating funding in our area today are based on those 2001 census figures, updated each year from information about births, deaths and other factors.

In 2001, North Kesteven had a census completion rate of 97% which is above the national average (94%). The population then was 94,024 and it is now estimated to be 105,700 (2009), a net growth of 11,676 in 10 years (= 12.4% growth).

How lovely to think that Spring will be well on the way when the next MACLA is published. In addition we will know the planning committee decision about the Mega- dairy which has been proposed for Nocton /Dunston. This issue has caused an unprecedented amount of interest in the local community and beyond. As a church we decided we needed to meet to pray that in this God's will is done. We meet for this on 7 March at 7.30 pm

We have had a chunk of our ceiling crash to the floor - thankfully not while we were worshipping!! It reminds us of the great age of our chapel (152years) and how fragile it is. We could do with a generous benefactor to help us to do all the work we would like to do to see the building really thrive - we especially would like a new kitchen for the monthly lunch club which goes from strength to strength.Thankfully we are still able to meet in a warm and cosy place for worship and are able to offer the building to those who need a place to meet. It's amazing how often those who have used the building or visited us say things like " it's a lovely place" or "there's a really special feeling here ".

This year the annual Christingle service (which traditionally is always held in January in Dunston) was held in conjunction with the school . John Corrie led the service and we gave out 100 Christingles. The children collected the unlit Christingle and then formed a big circle round the outside aisles at St Peter's. We then went round and lit all the candles. The circle of light around the church and the glow on the faces of the children was something to behold. It also raised £202.50 for the Church of England Children's Society.

I wander lonely as a cloud as I float up the garden in March surrounded in the garden and on the Beck by a host of golden daffodils. Not only are they golden, but tinged pink, orange, white, doubles, tete a tete, miniature, blowsy and all fluttering and dancing in the breeze. I just hope it will be a breeze and not a full blown tempest as we experienced earlier this year.

There is a legend which says that the daffodil or Lent Lily was white, but Persephone, who had wreathed her head with them and fallen asleep in the meadow, was captured by Pluto and carried off in his chariot. She let fall some of the lilies and they turned to a golden yellow. Why this should have happened is a complete mystery. And why should the Welsh adopt the daffodil as a twentieth century alternative to the leek is beyond me. I am sure there must be someone out there who can enlighten me!

Plant Swap and Afternoon Tea
This hard winter has killed many plants in our gardens, so here's your chance to fill in the holes!
On Sat 14 May (2 to 4pm) at St Peter's, you can bring plants you don't want and swap them for ones you like ........ or donate unwanted ones (we'll be happy to accept surplus fruit and veg as well!) ....or buy what others have donated.
And then relax with a 'cuppa' and a cream and jam scone!
So when you begin splitting too-large plants, don't throw bits away. Stick them in a pot or poly bag and save them for the plant swap.

The Annual Meeting is on Tues 12 April (7.30pm) in church. Open to all.

Church Flowers
Every week volunteers arrange flowers in church, often paying for them as well, but for big occasions - Easter, for example - many more flowers are needed. So if you can help with the cost, please give a small donation to Phyll Sands at Little Leyfield on Chapel Lane.

Scarecrow weekend
Through popular demand the scarecrow weekend is now an annual event and this year will take place on 24-25 September - so get your thinking caps on!

We are delighted to announce the appointment of Mr Harry Whitwell as President of the Band, and Mr Derrick Chantrey and Mr Stephen Fisher as Vice-Presidents. These honorary appointments have been made in recognition of the support these gentlemen have provided in the reformation and the ongoing development of Silver Sounds Band.
Christmas

The Band had a very busy festive season playing up to and including Christmas Day! This resulted in raising over £1300, a much needed boost for the Band funds. We would like to thank the residents of Dunston and Metheringham for their support and generosity, as well as the management and staff at the Red Lion (Dunston), Mowgli Restaurant and the Scarf & Goggles (Metheringham) for their support and donations of raffle prizes. A big thank you to Mr Chris Hewitt and All Saints Church, Nocton; Canon Bryan Barrodale and Branston PCC, and Metheringham Methodist Church, for their generous donations.

Winter arrived in style at Metheringham Primary School and we were hit with everything that it could throw at us. Like many of the schools in Lincolnshire, we were forced to close for four days because of the heavy snow falls and subsequent icy conditions. Thanks to a team of parents and governors who worked hard to clear the paths and car park of snow, we were set to reopen the school the following week.

We all arrived back in school on the Monday only to find that the heating system had failed over the weekend. With temperatures of -10 degrees outside, we were forced to close the school for a further day until the engineers got the heating system working again.

Our rehearsal plans for the infant nativity play were quickly altered, performances rescheduled and the Christmas Fair re-organised and we seemed to be back up and running again by the Tuesday. However, on Tuesday morning at 9:30 a message arrived in the office...there was no water in the Infant wing! Winter had once again bitten, leaving us with frozen pipes in the infant wing. We were determined not to be beaten this time and arrangements were made to use the facilities in the rest of the school. Christmas, and all of the enjoyment that it brings, was not going to be lost for our pupils.

Last term ended with our school choir singing at The Village Carol Service in the Methodist church, to the residents of The Haven in the village and also at our school Carol Service. Thankfully the cold weather did not affect the voices of our choir and they sang like angels at all of the village venues.

The New Year has started and we are all busy with our learning. Our Early Years pupils went to China for the morning, flying out from Metheringham Airport (the school hall).

Foundation Stage has a 'new pupil' who towers over everyone and terrifies us all as we walk down the corridor. Jack the Giant is now helping pupils with their Traditional Tales writing! Lower Key Stage 2 are studying life in the Indian village of Chembakolli and upper Key Stage 2 are looking at the 'Awesome Aztecs'.

We hope that the Winter weather does not make a return over the next few weeks and we all are looking forward to seeing the first signs of Spring in our school gardens.

The club is in hibernation for the winter, but dreaming of great events in the coming season! The pavilion and nearby field are drying out after a burst pipe which occurred during the great snow. The players will trundle up to start preparation work in March, and practices will start in April, after the change of the clocks. As usual, anyone interested in playing could come at 6.00pm on a Wednesday for practice, to the ground on the Bridle Path between Nocton and Dunston.

Brain Teaser

The Christmas Fair eventually went ahead after a number of postponements due to the snow. The fair was well attended and the new addition of Santa's Grotto was a particular favourite with the children! Over £400 was raised for school funds - Thank you to all who supported the event.

A 'Torchlight Treasure Hunt' went ahead on Friday 4 February. Around 15 families braved the high winds in search of treasure, and then enjoyed hot chocolate and hotdogs in the warmth of the school hall! An enjoyable evening was had by all and over £100 was raised.

Forthcoming events:
A school disco is being arranged for Friday 18 March which is to raise funds jointly for the school and comic relief. This takes place between 6.30 - 8.30 pm so please come along

All Club events are held at the Village Hall, Metheringham, unless otherwise stated.
Our Annual Christmas Dinner initially scheduled for Wednesday 1 December 2010 had to be postponed until Friday 10 December because of the snow and ice. Thankfully, the vast majority of members and guests were able to attend. Once again the catering was provided by Sue, from Woodhall Spa, and members have commented on how well her staff performed and especially in keeping the food hot.

Our most recent event, on 2 February, was a "Musical Rendezvous" with vocalist Judith Hibbert. Before the entertainment commenced, members stood in a silent tribute to past chairman Ron Creasey and past member Wyn Simpson who both died recently.
Judith who now lives in Beverley, has worked extensively in television, theatre, musicals, cabaret and pantomime. She has appeared with Jon Pertwee and as a supporting act to Danny La Rue.

Judith provided us with a very entertaining evening of `Musical Hall Theatre'. Her performances of songs from the "Sound of Music" would have had you thinking that the, very small, Metheringham hills were alive to the sound of Julie Andrews. Her version, complete with the right accent, of Elisa Doolittle's "Wouldn't It Be Lovely" was very enjoyable.

In addition to her excellent singing, Judith's more humorous side was demonstrated through her rendition of Victoria Wood's "Let's Do It" and featured wonderful facial expressions. Also, Joyce Grenfell monologues, including "George, don't do that!" Her verbal illustrations of people she has known and worked with were quite informative and amusing. Singing Gracie Field's "I've Never Cried So Much In All Me Life" and "Sally" brought her show to an end. Some of us had never laughed so much in all our lives. The above is just a snapshot of her performance. Members, if you missed this show, you were in the wrong place on the night!

Age UK newsletter provides the following advice.

In the lead up to the digital switchover in 2011 Digital UK and Trading Standards are warning people to be on their guard against cowboy contractors who may try to charge high fees for installing the system or carry out unnecessary work.

People are encouraged to look for Registered Digital Installers (RDI's) who display the "digital tick logo". This means that they are approved, security-checked and hold the relevant qualifications and insurance.

1. There is no such thing as a digital aerial and most existing aerials will work after the switchover, it may only need replacing if it's in poor condition.


2. If you need a new aerial always look for a Registered Digital Installer or a member of trade body CAI. Failing that word of mouth is a good way of finding an installer with a good track record.

The acclaimed international accordionist and entertainer Steve Roxton will be the guest artiste at Wragby Town Hall for our March meeting. We have been very lucky to get Steve to come to Lincolnshire, as his professional engagements take him to top venues all over Europe.

Last autumn he could be found with his accordion at the re-launch of the National Brewery Centre in Burton-on-Trent, where the guests included HRH Princess Anne. The day after that he set off for a tour of France, Holland and Belgium.

Always keen to support "grass roots", Steve is very popular on the Accordion Club circuit. This will be an exceptionally good evening, and you are welcome to join us. There is no admission fee, so put a note in your diary if you enjoy top quality live music: Wed 16 Mar - Starts at 7.30pm.

Setting off from the village hall, the walk heads out into the farmland and woodland around the village for a distance of 4 miles. With bluebells and wild garlic brimming over at this time of year come and enjoy our delightful countryside with Countryside Promotion Officer, Theresa Hobbs.

We will meet in the Village Hall car park in Nocton for 10.30am. Suitable clothing and footwear are recommended for a country walk, children under 16 years of age must be accompanied by an adult.

2011 commenced with our "Christmas" dinner, held once again at Martin Moor Golf Club in January. The meal was excellent and the evening concluded with a raffle.

Every meeting includes a raffle, refreshments and a variety of competitions. New members and visitors are always welcome.

Darts matches are in progress. We have two teams and matches and practice are held in the Star & Garter.
Table tennis is on a Thursday evening.
Ten-pin bowling outings to Lincoln Bowling Centre.
Golf Days around the county.

Film and theatre - there has already been an outing to see the film "The Kings Speech".
In April there will be a visit to Lincoln Theatre Royal to see "Oklahoma"

I would like to say a big thank you to the people who organize these activities.
The Phoenix Group Meeting (The WI's in this area) is to be held at Welbourne in March this year. The Guest Speaker is Auctioneer, Colin Young. These meetings are always well attended by Metheringham WI, and very enjoyable.

Over the last few months a number of people have asked how we are progressing with the work to the tower of St Oswalds, I guess because the scaffolding seems to have been in place for such a long time. Well, at last the P.C.C. has some good news to report in that English Heritage have agreed to give us a grant, initially, to produce a development plan for work on the tower. It is quite a complicated process but if, within twelve months, the development plan is completed to their satisfaction and meets all their criteria, then, we will be given a Stage Two grant which will enable us to begin actual repair work.

The P.C.C. would like to take this opportunity to thank the local community for their continued support. We will, of course, have to maintain our fund raising programme and now we know where we are heading, we hope to plan some events for later in the year. Please look out for local advertisements and support us if you can. St Oswald's is a beautiful building in its own right and we are all doing our best to preserve it for future generations. Community Panel
The panel is made up of representatives from Potterhanworth, Nocton, Dunston, Metheringham and Blankney. We meet quarterly to discuss any issues in the area that may need addressing, and from this we set our priorities. Your Panel met on Wednesday 2 February 2011 and the following priority has been set: -

1) Tackling anti-social behaviour in Metheringham through youth engagement, particularly looking at the provision of evening activities.

Lead and Oil Thefts
BE AWARE that, due to the ever-increasing value of any sort of metal, thieves are driving around stealing almost anything that is not 'nailed-down', and even some things that are. Churches are particularly vulnerable and unfortunately, both churches in Metheringham and Blankney have been targeted recently with the theft of lead flashing and a lightning conductor taken.

Furthermore, with the price of oil at an all-time high, your oil-tank is a target for thieves. Syphoning of oil from tanks is very much on the increase. If your oil-tank is at the bottom of the garden, with no lock of any sort on it, you are in danger of losing it.
Petrol-syphoning from cars and lorries has increased, and has become a national problem. Get a robust locking fuel-cap. If you are lucky enough to have a garage for your car, use it!

Please be vigilant, and report any suspicious activity. Details of the vehicle registration numbers are obviously a great help.

The Metheringham Scout Group has been involved with a number of events over the last few months both within the local and Scouting community. In October the Cubs and Scouts performed excellently by supporting the Spires and Steeples challenge, the Cubs by assisting at the start of the half distance challenge from the playing field and the Scouts by running the refreshment and mid distance checkpoint at the Dunston / Lincoln road crossroads. As a group we received many words of thanks from the organisers and participants for the enthusiasm that the Cubs and Scouts displayed on the day; well done to all who helped.

In late November it was confirmed that our new Group Scout Leader (GSL) was to be Pete Lincoln who has taken over from Brian Crombie. Brian left the group last year after giving over 25 years of service to Scouting in various roles from committee member, parent helper, leader and of course GSL. Brian has given a great deal of time and effort to the local community and we wish him the very best for the future.

Following the article written in the Winter Issue on the History of RAF Digby and the RCAF (also featured on the village website) a correction to the latter years has been posted on our website. We therefore apologise for the incorrect information originally published.

From 1947 RAF, Digby was the home of the Equipment & Secretarial Wing of RAF College Cranwell. The Station Commander (Group Captain) was also an Assistant Commandant of the College. The Cadets and Flight Cadets at Digby formed "D" Squadron of the College.

Between about July 1951 and March 1953 Digby had a 'lodger' unit..... an I.T.S. which was attached to a civilian grading unit, run by Airwork, to assess national service and short service entrants for aircrew. Thus Digby was in Flying Training Command during this period. Later it became a signals unit. There surely must be local folk who will remember the cadets. Many were employed at Digby and others would enjoy the camp cinema on Friday evenings.

The Visitors Centre will open the 2011 Season on Saturday 26 March

Prior to this the Centre will hold the first Lecture of the Season. This will take place on Wednesday 23 March and the lecturer will be Christopher Dean RAF (Retd) who will talk on - Air Operations on D-Day.

All lectures are held in the Old Gymnasium, commencing at 7.30 pm (unless otherwise stated). Entry is free to Members but for non-members there is a nominal fee. This includes tea/coffee and biscuits.

A further lecture takes place on 27 April by Mr Jim Shortland with his talk on RAF Woodhall Spa at War.

The Centre's Open Day will be on Sunday1 May

The Centre is proud to be able to show both a large scale model Spitfire and the Lancaster in the Gymnasium. One day it is hoped that they might have a Hurricane to make up the final member of the Metheringham Memorial Flight!

Many of or volunteers have had a rest since our Christmas Market in November. Like everyone else they have had or been trying to dodge the 'flu like' things that have been going around this Winter. MAWS party held at Martin Moor Golf Club in January was very successful but due to illness and folk feeling the "pinch" it was poorly attended. Money is short and it is showing. Many thanks to Carole and Alan for hosting the event; as always they made us so welcome. February, the sun is now shining and the volunteers are feeling brighter as they get busy putting out posters and selling tickets for our next do. A chance to get rid of the Winter Blues.

Always a topic by the FA is the introduction of a Winter Break. Unfortunately in our country, as to when this would be, is a difficult one to decide. This season our football club had an enforced break from the end of November through to the start of the new year. This created a tremendous backlog of fixtures with our Senior Leagues seeing sense and extending the season by two weekends. This said, our Saturday XI will still need to cram twelve games into the last two months. Unfortunately, to date, this extension has not been the case with our Youth League and some of our sides have already been playing two games a weekend (on top of whatever school games they have played). We as a club have noted that this is too much for youngsters but there is no suggestion as yet, that the season will be extended.

Before our season got underway we saw the demise of two sides with the U16s folding prior to the start of proceedings and then the Under 18s going the same way, two weeks into the season. Unfortunately this has now created a gap from youth football up to seniors with our oldest youth side now being our Under 15s. The club now has just nine sides, the lowest since the early '90s, (is this a sign of the times?). Also due to circumstances out of our control most of last seasons Under 18s now form our Sunday 2nd XI (a step too far without a mix of senior players), and due to the division they are in, is proving somewhat difficult for them. To date they sit bottom of their league, having won only one game. We would hope they stick together through to the end of the season so they can then be entered in a division more suitable to them.

On Thursday 5 May all our local villages (along with some 10,000 others around the country) will be going to the polling stations to elect the people they want to represent them on their Parish Council for the next 4 years. One has to just wonder how many local villagers could name the people who presently represent their villages.

Who can be a Parish Councillor
Anyone over the age of 18 who is a British subject, a citizen of the Commonwealth or the Irish Republic may become a Parish Councillor, providing they are a registered elector of the Parish or live within three miles of the Parish.

Parish Councillors are unpaid and give their time freely. That said, it can be a very rewarding and interesting experience and helps you to give something back to the community you live in. It enables you to work alongside likeminded people, share ideas, discuss projects, and have a very real input into decisions concerning the parish and the continuing development of the community. You really can make a difference to your community by becoming a Parish Councillor.

In the past 12 months your local first responders have attended 231 calls. What an achievement! A big thank you to all the responders and also to those who have supported us financially. We currently have a small but experienced team of 6 responders, mostly offering evening and night time cover. We have a new recruit awaiting basic training and have received 3 more enquiries recently. These are exciting developments as we are always keen to add new members to our team.

LIVES are currently developing a new level of responders, level 1. These responders will only be called to non life threatening, category 'C' 999 calls and will not be required to perform CPR or use the defibrillator machine. It will be possible for people to respond only at this level. If you feel you may be interested in this,

Hopefully by the time you read this report it will be getting more like "bowling" weather.
We will be opening the "Green" on Sunday 17 April at 2.00 pm and we look forward to seeing you all there and hopefully more "new" members too.

We are looking towards holding a Plant Sale some time during May along with a Coffee Morning at the same time.

If you like gentle exercise why not come and play bowls. New members are always welcome. A gentle 2 hour stroll up and down the "Green" is good for you and it is a great game to play, for all ages.

Although a little late, I wish to say a huge thank you to the people of Metheringham and the surrounding area for the generous donations towards the 2010 appeal. The Royal British Legion is trying to raise a million pounds in the coming months to mark its 90th anniversary. With the amount raised by you, they are well on the way to reaching the target.

This is well above last year's total and will go a long way towards helping those in need. Of course, the total could have been even higher if it had not been for the mindless, selfish, disrespectful actions of a person(s) who broke into the Star and Garter PH on the Sunday night after Remembrance Day and stole all the money from the various charity collection boxes, including the two belonging to the Poppy Appeal. Hopefully the police caught the perpetrator.

I would like to thank all volunteers who go house to house selling poppies. You have done really well. Also I would like to thank those businesses that have poppy boxes on display for customers to donate, and the Parish Council, for their very generous donation. Well done everybody

They were all a credit to their different units and their leaders are to be congratulated. Many thanks to you all, and my apologies for the lateness of this statement."

Metheringham Amateur Dramatics (MAD) has had a very successful pantomime this year. Puss in Boots was a fun-filled performance and we had good audiences of all ages. Thank you to all those who supported us and we hope that you will come to some of our future productions this coming year.

In July we hope to perform 'Our Day Out' by Willy Russell which has a cast of several young people and we would ask that if you would like to have more information, to contact Gaynor Little. October sees our production of 'Ghost Train' which is a good old fashioned drama set in a waiting room of a train station in the 1930's. The author Arnold Ridley, who played Godfrey in 'Dad's Army' wrote this in 1923 and it was made into a successful film starring Arthur Askey in 1941.So keep your diaries free for 30 September, 1 / 7 and 8 October.

We also have two 1 act plays in the pipe line - one of which we hope to perform at Sleaford Little Theatre as part of their festival plays.

After the euphoria of the national team's success in the ashes series, we at the cricket cannot wait for the 2011 season to start.

Work continues to be done on the ground to ensure that it is in tip top condition for the start of the new season. It is also hoped that the exterior of the pavilion will also be completely repainted. Hopefully this can be done as part of the NatWest Cricket Force 2011 weekend which takes place on the weekend of the 8,9 and 10 of April. http://www.ecb.co.uk/development/natwest-cricketforce/ - so if anyone would like to get involved please contact me at one of the contact numbers below.

Pre season indoor cricket nets will start on Thursday 3 March at 7.30pm at RAF Digby and will run for 6 consecutive weeks. Our thanks go to RAF Digby for letting us use their facilities. If anyone wishes to come to the nets, and all are welcome, please let me know as a list of those attending is needed to gain access to the facility.

As always, the club is looking for match ball sponsors to help ease our match day costs. Unfortunately it costs a lot of money to run a cricket club and as with everything these costs keep rising, from balls to umpires fees.

The club will again have two weekend teams playing in the South Lincs & Border League on a Saturday and the McKinnells Lincoln League on a Sunday. There will also be a midweek team which again will play under the title of Blankney Estates.

Our annual general meeting will be held on Thursday 24 February when our respective officers will be decided for the current year. These will no doubt have been decided by the time this article is published.

The Twinning Association would like to thank the fifteen couples who took part in the recent Safari Supper. Everyone had a great time and we also made some money for the Twinning funds which will be spent when our friends from Sceaux-Sur-Huisne come next Easter.

Due to the bad weather we had a frantic catch up day at the Coffee Morning on Thursday 16 December. We held our Christmas Stall, gave out Coffee and Mince Pies and many Christmas Cards all on the same morning. It was certainly a bit hectic but we were so pleased to see everyone after three weeks of absence. It was a truly lovely atmosphere and we hope everyone enjoyed it. We put the raffle off until later and this was held on 27 January, raising £70.00. Many thanks for all your kind donations.

A donation was received in memory of Mrs Win Simpson, who sadly passed away on 28 December, aged a marvellous 96. Win was a long time member of our Coffee Mornings and was much loved by all and will be sadly missed. Many thanks to her family who have so generously supported us.

The Senior Citizens Party will be held on Saturday 9 April with entertainment by Nic and Nita.

Our first outing of 2011 will be on Tuesday 14 June when we will visit Doncaster Market. Make a note in your diary.

The new bowls season will begin again in Dunston in April 2011.

We are a small friendly club who play in three leagues i.e. on a Monday and Wednesday evening and an afternoon league on a Wednesday. We will be having an open day at the beginning of the season so if you are a complete beginner or someone who used to play bowls but have not played for some time, do come along and have a game. We have several spare sets of bowls at the club which you can use as a starter and some shoes (you can wear your own flat soled shoes) and waterproofs, so don't let it put you off if you haven't got the kit.

QUIZ NIGHT - Friday 11 March at Dunston Village Hall.
7.00 for 7.30. tickets £4.00 each including nibbles. Maximum 6 per table, please bring your own drinks. Proceeds for Dunston Bowls Club.

The club re-opened on 12 January after what seemed a very long break due to our Christmas lunch being postponed (to the 9 February) because of the adverse weather conditions. Members enjoyed an afternoon of quizzes and caught up on the gossip.

On 26 January Dennis & Kathleen Wass once again kept members on their toes with 20 antique items. Members had to establish what the item was and its usage. There was much laughter over the many funny guesses and our highest score was 10 out of 20.

Our March meetings will be held on 9th & 23rd.

Due to the bad weather before Christmas, we had to postpone our Christmas performance by Classes 2 and 3. Instead it turned into a January treat! The panto is a modern take on a well known story and is called Cinderella Rockerfella. It was a great success and many parents and relatives said that it was the best performance that they had ever seen at the school. The singing was outstanding, including some stunning solos. The children acted with great confidence and a couple of Year 6 boys even donned dresses and make up as the ugly sisters!

We have enjoyed two swap days with our partner school Digby Primary recently. Some of our children have spent the day at Digby, meeting their pen-pals and experiencing a school day in a different school. In return, some of the Digby children have been to Dunston. The children got on very well indeed and enjoyed the day.

The Friends have put on a Torchlight Treasure Hunt around the school grounds. The children had great fun and the strong wind just made it more exciting. £100 was raised for School Funds.

Finally, Barry Cooper has been at school to run Judo workshops with each class. Barry runs a Judo club in Branston and he showed the children how to do some basic moves. We already have some pupils who do Judo outside of school and there are now many others who would like to take it up!

We have now started a new year and we are busy planning for forthcoming events.
In April there are 44 of us travelling across to Trange via Eurostar where we will spend 3 whole days with our families. During this visit we also spend a lot of the time in a whole group, enjoying whatever events they have got planned for us.

The Duck Race this year is 2 July 2011, 2pm onwards so put this date in your diaries. It's a great day.

We continue to try and attract new families, especially families with young children. We have at the moment one French family with young children waiting to be matched with either families from Dunston, Nocton or Metheringham, so come on, give it some thought. It is not only great fun but an education for the children, and the adults have a great time as well.

We are thinking of introducing a savings plan for families who wish to put money aside for when we travel to Trange. The cost of any visit either to them or them to us is not vast, because as an organisation we heavily subsidise the cost when they visit us. So if you are at all interested, then pick up that phone and dial one of the numbers below and we will give you all the information you need (No obligation).

These are exciting times for the village hall as new opportunities have arisen for fresh users to make use of the hall and its ever improving facilities. Saturdays and alternate Sundays are now available for hire, as are Tuesday afternoons and evenings, Thursday afternoon and early evening and Friday afternoons.

The New Age Kurling now has a regular slot on Friday evenings from 7.00-9.00p.m. and is hoping to expand its popularity by attracting competition with other groups. This sport is open to all ages and abilities but if you are not sure, come along and give it a try. Cost is £3 or £10 for a family of four.

The newly enclosed area at the rear of the building and the new doors for the electronically operated disabled entrance and the additional double doors are now completed and in use.

This year's MAD pantomime made use of the new electronics box on the stage and accommodated full houses to its performances at the end of January.

Sadly we have to report that the Ikuma Karate classes have recently ceased. Dean and the gang will be missed, as Karate has been a regular feature of Sunday mornings in the village, for around 20 years.

The Annual General Meeting of the Metheringham Village Hall Management Committee takes place on Tuesday 12 April at 7.30p.m. in the village hall. This is an opportunity for everyone to find out about their village hall; whether they are representing a local group or not. We like to have as many group representatives as possible on the committee, not necessarily just the regular users, so please come along.

The committee would like to thank all those who helped at the Christmas Party. There was a stronger emphasis on children's activities than in the past and particular thanks should go to the Bakers, the Davidson-Petchs and the Wrights for organising that side of the evening so successfully.

The Christmas quiz raised over £80 for Metheringham Village Hall. The one question which divided opinion was the date of the first Christmas Day dip in the Serpentine, Hyde Park, London. Five people had 48 answers correct, three people had 49 but only one person had all correct so congratulations go to Mrs Iris Bosnell of Ruskington. Many thanks to Pauline for setting and running the quiz.

As well as the AGM, other events looming are the 50/50 Sale on Saturday 26 March and the Spring Fayre on Saturday 9 April and details for both events will be posted around the village and in the local press and on the MACLA website as usual, nearer the time. Another date for your diary is 14 October for the bandconcert.

The Women's Day of Prayer is on Friday 4 March. A service for the day has been prepared by the Christian women of Chile. There will be a service, at 10.30am in the Methodist Church.

On Saturday 19 March we are holding a Coffee Morning with raffle, tombola and cake stall to raise funds for St Barnabas Hospice. Please support this worthwhile charity and find out more about their work.

Friday 8 April we will be holding a Sausage & Mash Supper in the Chapel Hall starting at 7.00pm, tickets from Joyce Sellars.

There will be a United Service on Good Friday 22 April at 10.30am in the Methodist Church, led by Dennis Channon. The Easter Day Service on 24 April will be at 10.30am.

On Saturday 14 May we are holding a May Coffee Morning from 9.30am to 11.30am in the Chapel Hall to raise funds for the Church. This will include coffee, tea and scones, raffle, tombola, cake, and bric-a-brac stall.

We will celebrate our 103rd Church Anniversary and hold a Gift Day on Sunday 15 May at 6.00pm. The service will be led by the Wesley Singers. There will be no morning service on that day.

There has been a problem with publishing Minutes of Parish Council Meetings because, Scopwick and Kirkby Green, being only a small Parish, the Meetings are only held every two months. Thus, when the Minutes are posted they are already some weeks old. To improve communication the Council has given approval for NOTES of the Council Meetings to be posted as soon as practical after each Meeting. The NOTES will not become Minutes until formally approved at the next Council Meeting but any corrections should be insignificant.

Remember that Parish Council Meetings are open meetings and any member of the public is welcome to attend to air any issue during the public forum or to listen to the discussions and resolutions covered in the published agenda.

The District and Parish Council elections are due on 5 May. If there is anybody in the Parish that wishes to stand for election as a Parish Councillor then the appropriate documentation will be available from the Clerk. Nomination can be submitted from 21 March to noon on 5 April.

Maintenance in the villages goes on. The most noticeable being the reduction of the hedge in front of the Paying Field. This has been done to improve visibility from both inside and outside the field for local people and for visitors who come to use the facilities.

Residents should be pleased that the local Precept for 2011/2012, the amount collected within the Council Tax for all the work done by the Parish Council, has been set at the same amount as for the last three years. In real terms that is a reduction each year. That has been possible by close control of the budget by the Council while still managing to financially assist projects with local benefit.

Event dates for your diary:
Daffodil Weekend will be 19/20 March. This popular event will commence at 12.00 noon on the Saturday with a Ploughman's Lunch in the Village Hall. As in previous years there will be stalls set up and a guided walk round the village for those interested in the local history of Scopwick. On Sunday there will be a service at 10.30am in the Methodist Chapel. All are welcome.

The Play Bus with something to occupy toddlers to teenagers during the Easter break is due in Scopwick on Wed 20 April. Details will be posted.

The Annual Summer Show will take place on Sat 3 August in the Village Hall and Meadow.

The members and guests were treated to a very unusual demo on 11 February. Debbie Mitchell was the artist who gave a demonstration of cartoon drawing. We were given paper and pencil - a change from the norm - and we proceeded to draw faces, animals and objects. What a lot of fun we had and all entered in with great enthusiasm. Debbie finished by painting a cartoon cow, with us following along. It seemed more like a workshop. The number attending was over 30, which included 10 visitors from other clubs in the area, and judging by the comments we hope to get even more next time.

EXHIBITION OF PAINTINGS 1st-2nd October

By the time you read this, the Christmas Fair will have long been over. It was a successful event and the Friends raised £400 with our raffle, tombola and second hand book stall. Congratulations to the winners of the raffle, especially the Christmas Hamper and the Christmas cake, the latter of which was donated by Pauline Moore - many thanks.

We will most likely also have had our Music Quiz on 4 March, hosted for us once again by Nick Redfern. These are always great evenings so if you missed this one then keep an eye out for next year's quiz.

The next things on our agenda are the Easter Disco on 7 April and the Easter Egg Raffle which will be drawn on the afternoon of 8 April - just in time for the children to take their winnings home for the Easter holidays. Tickets for the raffle will be available from school from 30 March between 8.40 and 9.10am and 3.15 and 3.45pm each day. Raffle prizes will be gratefully received - many thanks in anticipation!

The annual presentation evening in November celebrated the successes of the year for The Angels Dance Squad and acknowledged the Trainer's Majorette as Lauren Bowring and Angel's Angel chosen by the squad as Beth Murray. Many congratulations to Beth and Lauren.

The Angel's second GBBTA competition in December brought even greater success as the Angels Dance Squad received 13 awards - All the hard work in training paid off - well done girls! Great fun was had by all watching the Adult marching competition - Angel's parents promise that they too will participate next year in this fancy dress event, much to the delight of the squad!

Our Christmas party to celebrate the success of the competition and to bring the year to a close was yet again great fun. Games galore, fun and laughter ensured another successful evening.

January brought a flurry of activity to training as new dances are choreographed and learned. This evolution of routines ensures that the team continue to improve and adapt their style, keeping it fresh. A special thank you must go to Lesley, Jodie and Lauren who make it all possible.

Following the AGM the management committee was newly voted in to continue the sterling task of maintaining the troupe and to pursue fun fund-raising ideas. The first such event being our Quiz Night, held at Scopwick Village Hall on 26 February. A Car Boot and Table Top Sale will also be held on 30 April, 10am - 2pm at Scopwick Village Hall so look out for details for this nearer the time.

The Angel's Dance squad will be dancing in many local attractions this coming year so look out for displays of their hard work and come along and support them. The Library Staff Awards took place on Tuesday 7 December and celebrated the hard work of libraries across Lincolnshire. The awards were held at the Cathedral Centre in Lincoln, a beautiful setting for this celebration. The awards this year represented a development on last year and focused on a spectrum of performance encompassing: Quality Standards, Customer Satisfaction as well as the more traditional indicators - interactions, issues and new members during 2009/10. There were 4 award categories this year and for each of these a District, Neighbourhood and Community Library winner. We were delighted to be awarded the People's Choice Award for a Community Library, so thank you to all of our customers who filled in survey forms and put positive comments. At first Mel was not impressed that we had got an award just as she retired but she was invited to the ceremony as well.

Lizzy Mason, the Fairy Queen Artist, who makes our beautiful displays, will be running a course for children from Tuesday 15 March to 5 April, 4pm - 5pm in the library. The four sessions will cost a total of £18 per child and Lizzy will be showing the children how to make Easter baskets, Easter cards, Springtime fairies and Easter bunny puppets.

Ruskington Tennis Club has, for the passed few years, (by kind permission of the RAF) played its games on the courts at RAF Digby. We are a long established but principally a recreational club catering for people of all abilities and ages. (Our current age range is 16 to 70+).

We have use of the courts on a Monday and Wednesday evening from 6.00 pm onwards (from April). We would welcome any new potential members from the MACLA area.

We were fortunate that Paul Greenwood read the article in the "Echo" following our break-in and offered the help of his father, Roy and himself in replacing the stolen water pipes in the changing rooms and toilets. The work should be completed in the near future.

Two doors were kicked in and are beyond repair; plus the boiler room door requires a new locking mechanism. Also a new gas pipe (approx. 5 metres long, is needed) as this was taken, meaning there can be no warm water until it is replaced. This was not mild vandalism by local youths which occurs from time to time, but organized crime by persons who know what they are looking for.

We will be organizing several "tidy-up" weekends during March so please watch out for notices around the village seeking your help. The pool tank needs scrubbing and a crack repaired. There is also a lot of painting and cleaning required and any help would be much appreciated.

Our aim is to be open by the Easter holiday should the weather be nice, so lots of preparation is needed.

There is to be a Fashion Show, by Lincs Fashions on Wed 23 March at 7.30 pm in the Village Hall. Tickets are £2.50 from any committee member or on the door. Bring your own drink and glass.

MADSPA A.G.M. is on Mon 28 March (7.30 pm) in the Pavilion, adjacent to the Pool.

For those that have visited this site in the past few days, you may have noticed that the image of the mill on the home page has been replaced by a series of images counting down to today. Why the countdown?

Well, I'm pleased to announce that the Metheringham area website has reached a very significant milestone. Today, Tuesday 01 March 2011 is the 10th anniversary of the Metheringham Area website. This is a real achievement. What started as a few web pages designed to publicise the Metheringham Area Community Leisure Association's newsletter has grown like Topsy to the site you see today.

What started as a fun idea that was supposed to take a few hours every three months has grown over the years to become a true labour of love. This site is a true testament to our community with almost all the content being supplied by you. And for that, I've got to say a huge thank you.

Deserving of a special mention is Pete Ford, who has supplied more than his fair share of the content over the past 10 years. His initial enthusiasm and support for the site has not waned, his love of our community has shown through in every article, every email and every suggestion for the site that he has provided.

Not many community sites last this long. Many other community sites have come and gone but the MACLA site is still here and, if the logs are to be believed, is avidly read by over 100 people every day.

Over the next few weeks, I plan a series of posts celebrating this achievement and looking back on some of the more memorable moments whilst asking what lies over the brow of the next hill.

Once again, a huge thank you to you , our community, for helping us reach this milestone
