Census 2011 Update

Census Day is Sunday 27 March 2011

The last census was 2001 and the figures used for calculating funding in our area today are based on those 2001 census figures, updated each year from information about births, deaths and other factors.

In 2001, North Kesteven had a census completion rate of 97% which is above the national average (94%). The population then was 94,024 and it is now estimated to be 105,700 (2009), a net growth of 11,676 in 10 years (= 12.4% growth).

But what has happened to North Kesteven in the last 10 years?

  • an ageing population with greater demand for resources

  • new house building

  • economic migration from the new accession EU countries (mainly Eastern Europe)

So it is important to get the figures right in 2011 to make sure our community receives the funding to provide services for the community such as hospitals, doctors, schools, leisure centres, roads, police, fire etc.

How Census 2011 will be different from the last time.
This time, all the census questionnaires will be sent out by post to every domestic address in the country. The forms will be completed and returned by post or, for the first time, completed online, using the unique number on the form.
Census Collectors will visit households who have not returned their form.

How can you or your organisation help?
Recruitment - we need Census Collectors for North Kesteven - people with local knowledge. Hours will be flexible, including evenings and weekends. If you know anyone who might be suitable, encourage them to go online at www.censusjobs.co.uk and apply.
Raise awareness in your organisation of the importance of the Census 2011 for future funding.

Remember: Census numbers = Funding for the next 10 years for our community.
Help us to reach our target population groups
Using your networks help us to reach and support groups who have been under counted in the past and those who may need help completing the form, for example:-

  • Older and vulnerable people

  • Young adults

  • Eastern European migrant workers

  • Those with a disability which may be a barrier to completing the form (sight, hearing, literacy, learning disability)

Help organise a Census form completion event.
Work with census staff to organise a drop-in session to help people fill in their Census forms.
