Metheringham Over 60's Club - Summer 2011

All Club events are held at the Village Hall, Metheringham, unless otherwise stated.

On Wednesday, 6 April, the majority of our current members re-joined for the year 2011-2012. Entertainment for the evening was provided by Mr Noel Gee. Noel supports the AmbuCopter through his performances. He was a member of the Lincoln group "The Casuals" who recorded hits during the 60s. Their "Jesamine" reached number two in the record charts and is still regularly played on the radio, Mary Hopkins with "Those Were The Days" was number one at the time. His performance was anything but casual. Giving excellent renditions of songs from the late 50s and 60s including Emile Ford's "What Do You Want To Make Those Eyes At Me For"; Cliff Richard's "Livin' Doll" & "The Young Ones". Songs from Shirley Bassey, the Beatles, The Everly Brothers, Billy Fury, Tom Jones, Jim Reeves, The Searchers, The Springfields and many more. We were treated to the unofficial Irish National Anthem "Danny Boy" and Noel finished with the Liverpool anthem "You'll Never Walk Alone".

After the interval Noel recounted that he had been approached by one lady member, who shall be nameless, to buy one of his CDs and had remarked that he looked much older close up!

Three members of the committee were sat at a table to one side of the stage recording details of members re-joining and remained sitting there whilst Noel performed. Noel remarked that they appeared to be like an 'X Factor' panel. This comprised Treasurer, Dave Harvey, Rita Blow, a rose between two thorns, and Secretary Dave Williams. During the interval and unbeknown to Noel, A4 size numbers were produced in preparation for the second half. After his second song, chairman Margaret stopped Noel whilst she asked the panel to rate his performance, their decision gave him scores of 7, 7 and 8; thus adding to the general good humour of the evening.
To add to the atmosphere, members, knowing most of the words by heart, joined in with enthusiasm and gave Noel loud and prolonged applause throughout the evening.
Petwood Hotel Lunch: On Wednesday, 27 April, 120 members enjoyed a three course lunch, including wine, at the Petwood Hotel, Woodhall Spa. Funding came from a bequest by the late Trudie Pilsbury, who wanted a party, and a donation from the family of the late Wyn Simpson. Our heartfelt thanks and condolences go out to their families. The club met the balance of the costs.
Summer Holiday: There has been a change to the dates of this year's holiday. Still to Weston-Super-Mare, Somerset, but from Monday, 26 September to Saturday, 1 October 2011, inclusive, staying at The Lauriston Hotel. The cost for 6 days, five nights, will be £350.00p per person. The price includes half-board, entertainment every evening, all gratuities, holiday insurance and no single room supplement. Also includes, couriers, day trips to Bath; tour of Exmoor stopping at Lynton & Lynmouth; Wells Cathedral and the Bishop's Palace with a stop at Cheddar (cheese). Holidays are not subsidised by the club, therefore, it is open to both members and non-members. There are still places available. For further details contact Chairman Margaret Amos on Tel: 01526 321049 as soon as possible.
On Wednesday, 4 May, we welcomed 14 new members to the club. Entertainment for the evening was provided by Mr. Trev (Budge) Walton, a vocalist who accompanied himself on his accordion. He also used a keyboard and two synthesizers.
Trev gave us a rendition of "The Tennessee Waltz". This reminded me that at aged 10 years, singing that same song, I won a singing competition at the St. John Ambulance Brigade in North Wales. That was the pinnacle of my singing career and it has been going down hill ever since.
We had medleys of well known singers Glenn Miller, Cliff Richard's "Move it", Bobby Vee's, "Take Good Care of My Baby", 10CC's, "Bad Moon Rising'" and "Duelling Banjos", amongst many others. He also produced an interesting version of "The Dambuster's March" using the keyboard and synthesizers.
As well as an excellent work rate, Trev gave a good performance playing his own musical, arrangements but with some imbalance of volume over vocals and perhaps a little too much of songs in the distant past. Members may be aged over 60 but we did not stop listening to music produced after the 1960s. Interaction with his audience was more noticeable during the second half of his performance and he is the type of performer that you may find and thoroughly enjoy at your Spanish holiday resort. Overall, his performance was well received by members.
Our next members evening, will be on Wed 7 September.
