Metheringham Royal Wedding Post Script!!
A fantastic day of celebration was held in the village hall to commemorate the wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton on Friday 29th April.
With the village hall decorated in loads of bunting, our retained firemen arrived at 8 in the morning to decorate Fen Road. The road was closed to traffic till 23:00 hours.
The village hall was resplendent with a huge table of tombola prizes wrapped in wedding paper, a very lovely wedding cake and with a large screen on the stage surrounded by beautiful flowers, the hall filled up and the wedding ceremony started.
Many families attended in the morning and were treated to a beautiful service made even better with the number of young children waving their flags.
At 12, a bridal dress exhibition, with dresses on view spanning over 100 years, opened in the Methodist Chapel and all afternoon people came and looked in awe at the 27 wedding dresses, donated by ladies of the village together with some beautiful flower arrangements for every dress.
In the afternoon the action moved into Fen Road with a street party where over 150 children each had a goody bag with a hat, flag, and commemorative mug. A street entertainer on stilts entertained whilst there was also, face painting, hook a duck, a steam engine and a bouncy castle to amuse.
By 5 the action moved back into the village hall with some really good entertainment, compared by Graeme Pembery, who also sang. Joe Gray together with Chloe and friends performed his own material was outstanding and everyone really enjoyed his music.
In the evening, The Bootlegs, together with DJ Bob entertained us until 23:00.
It was an amazing day for all the right reasons. Everyone had a good time and it was estimated that in excess of 400 people were at the street party, and Look North went out with 3 live interviews during the day.
We would like to thank the following for all their help:
- Maggie and Lyn who show us all how to make a party work!! Their enthusiasm was infectious and they worked tirelessly. Sarah, and her helpers for doing such a wonderful job with the bridal exhibition. To the Methodist Chapel for being so accommodating.
- Doreen and her team of ladies, who not only decorated the village hall and Methodist Chapel with the most wonderful flowers, but also the village cross in the centre of the village. Doreen was seen at 7 in the morning wheeling her barrow filled with red, white and blue flowers, through the village. Beautiful!
- Val and Rita for the wedding cake which was loved by all.
- The Metheringham Retained Firemen who put up the bunting and took it down again.
- Danny and helpers who put the big screen and TV together.
- Giles for the photography, Will for all the furniture moving and bunting putting up!!
- Amanda Whitehead for so much.
- Rob Halls the village hall Caretaker, and all the helpers who helped organise the goody boxes and put the bunting up and the many who turned up to blow up balloons so early on Friday morning.
- The following businesses for their tombola prizes: Costcutters, Chinese take away, D &K news, Londsborough, Andrews, Karen Kuts, White Hart, Star and Garter, Trophy shop, Convenience store, Coop, Beehive, Mowgli, Kelly's Catch, Great Barrier Reef, Pizza shop, Last Chance and those who turned up with prizes on the day.
And finally, thank you - to you- for your support and for the importance of bringing the village together to make sure we have a historical account of this event.
The next event we hope to be bringing to you is the Queens Diamond Jubilee in June 2012. We want to involve you to find out what you would like see happen in your village. All this depends of funding. We are looking into this but in these austere times it looks like none will be available from outside of the village. So we will be doing lots of fundraising.
If you have any ideas or would like to help us please email us on maclaroyalwedding@hotmail.com. We will be holding an open meeting later in the year. Catch the photos here.
