Metheringham Primary School News Summer 2011
We have welcomed this lovely spring weather which has lifted spirits and has encouraged us all outside to enjoy the sunshine. Work has started in the school gardens and the pupils have enjoyed spring walks and mini beast hunts in the grounds and the village.
Our yearly residential to the Kingswood West Runton centre in Norfolk took place at the end of March. We were blessed with wonderful, sunny weather during the school week away and the pupils had access to many of the outdoor activities that were on offer. As well as all of the challenging high ropes activities, pupils took part in laser quest, go-carting, fencing, archery and many problem solving and team building activities. Time was also spent on the beach at West Runton where pupils studied marine life and habitats in the rock pools and on a river study trip in the Norfolk countryside.
The school took part in the Branston Community Academy tag rugby festival at the end of March. Our team of Year 5 players won the 'fair play' award for their efforts and for being good sports and supportive towards other players and teams throughout the event.
Our Year 4/5 football players also came third in the Branston Community Academy football tournament at the end of April. The school is now working with cricket coaches and tennis coaches to help develop wider sports skills.
Pupils in Mrs Jones' and Mr Bell's classes put on a wonderful performance of 'Fleeced' at the end of last term. This was based around the story of Jason and the Golden Fleece. With the help of the hard working staffing team, the pupils put on an outstanding show that would better many in the West End. The singing and acting was of an excellent standard and the children's enthusiasm and enjoyment wer very evident.
Once again the Easter Bonnet Parade brought a splash of colour and creativity to the school on the last day of term 4. Our Early Years pupils paraded in their bonnets for the large group of parents attending the Easter Assembly. Easter songs and prayers were shared with everyone. Our Key Stage 2 pupils brought in decorated eggs which were on display for all of the school and for parents attending the Easter assemblies. The most difficult job on the day went to Mrs Margaret Amos who accepted our invitation to judge the Easter Bonnets and decorated Easter eggs.
We celebrated the recent Royal Wedding with Metheringham Primary School's own royal event at St Wilfrid's church. Pupils from Miss Meyerhoff's and Mrs Thackray's and Mrs Lawford's classes attended church for their own version of the Royal Wedding. Pupils and parents dressed up in their best wedding clothes and paraded to the church waving their union jack flags in honour of the happy event. Many tears were shed as our bride and groom shared their vows.
The summer terms are already filling up with school visits, induction days, senior school taster days, school performances, parents evenings, discos, SATs, fund raising events, sports, athletics festivals, bikeability training...the list goes on. We hope that the recent good weather continues so that everyone can enjoy this time of year.
