Introducing the Dunston Hub

No longer having the facility of a local shop in the village, together with increased cost of 'bus fares and a less than efficient service, brought about the idea of introducing, the 'Dunston Hub'. Initially the venture was for six months, on one day a month. Thursday was chosen to coincide with the Post Office facility (open on this day) and it was hoped it would encourage everyone to use it for their postal needs and phone top-ups.

The Dunston Hub started in the Village Hall on Thursday 12 May for two hours between 2pm and 4pm. It was geared to cover the needs of everyone from the youngest to the oldest and after being in existence now, for six months, it has proved to be convenient for many, many residents, including parents and pensioners alike.

The idea behind this community project was to allow local residents to pop into the Village Hall and have a cup of tea or coffee with a slice of cake, meet new people or chat with friends and browse what was on offer. It also provided an opportunity for residents to bring anything to sell from surplus plants, home grown fruit and vegetables to hens eggs. Also on offer were home-made cakes, homemade jams, pickles or preserves which always found a buyer. Numerous different crafts, such as cushions, jewellery, toys and greetings cards were also well received and a book stall was very popular, where people could borrow three books for a month for £1. Really popular visitors were a butcher, selling local meat (Horncastle area) and basic grocery items, along with fishmonger selling fish, directly from Grimsby. These two suppliers aim to be in the Village Hall car park just after 3.00 pm on the day.

Over the following months more and more different products became available including a 'Nearly New' rail where good quality clothes or shoes were sold. The popularity of the Book Stall means the organizers need more paperback books for adults and children's books - these can be brought along to the next Hub or dropped off at either Swallowbeck or Ashbrook Lodge on Fen Lane.

If anyone has any ideas of what sort of 'different' stalls could be offered or would like to help at the Hub, please get in touch with Diana on 320460 or Jean on 0750 6330080.

These ladies would also like to hear your views as to:

  • Do you think that the Dunston Hub provides a valuable service to the community?

  • Do you think that the Parish Council should help towards the cost of hiring the village hall for the Hub?

Please talk to the Parish Councillors and let them know what you think about the Dunston Hub.

NB
Leading up to Christmas, examples of holly wreaths will be on show for people to order and orders will also be taken for Christmas trees.

Also note you will be able to place your Christmas orders with the butcher and the fishmonger for collection at the HUB on 8 Dec or delivered to your home later in the month.

Finally seek out Ann and Rachel who will be taking orders for Christmas Cakes and Party Food.

Dunston Hub will continue in the Village Hall on the second Thursday of each month, 2 to 4 pm. With the dates for the next few months being 8 Dec / 12 Jan / 9 Feb / 8 Mar / 12 Apr.
