1st Metheringham Scout Group Summer 2012
In early March two teams of Scouts from the 1st Metheringham Scout Group took part in the Elephant Yomp event held on and around the footpaths near Horncastle. It was a challenge of Map reading, observations and team work skills that put the scouts through their paces. The Scouts who took part gave the challenge their best shot and had a fantastic time as the weather on the day was wonderful.
Soon after the Elephant Yomp came the Scout Survival camp, held at the Dukes Covert campsite, near Ancaster. The Scouts had the chance to practise their shelter building, fire lighting and cooking skills. They were also shown some trapping methods by Stuart the Camp Warden and were treated to a tasty slice of mutton, cooked in an underground oven. Fortunately the weather stayed dry and even though it became quite cold in the evening the Scouts who attended had a great time and made best use of the shelters they had built during the day.
In April, St Deny's church, in Sleaford held the annual St George's Day Service that was attended by all the Scout Groups from the Sleaford district. Thankfully there was a break in the weather that allowed the parade to go ahead as usual. The Scout Groups marched through Sleaford from the Council Offices to the church for the service and then back again afterwards. It was a sight to behold and my thanks go out to all the Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, leaders, helpers and parents who attended.
The group family camp in mid May is going to be held at the Sherbrooke Scout camp site in Calverton near Mansfield. It will be a fun packed weekend with activities such as crafts, back woods cooking, games, a bungee run, bottle rockets, Olympic style races and of course, no camp would be complete without a good old camp fire and sing song.
Some up coming events that we are looking forward to are the expedition to conquer Snowdon and the Group sponsored walk in June and our annual Summer camp in July.
As ever, your Scout Group needs the support of the local community if we are to continue to provide exciting opportunities for our young people. At the current time we are looking for a Committee Chairman and we could always do with a few more uniformed leaders.
