Metheringham Airfield Open Weekend - 9/10 June 2012

Foma_open12.png

It appears that Doctor Who may have lost his Tardis in trying to go back in time, but the Friends of Metheringham Airfied have a different approach to take visitors back to the days when RAF Metheringham was an active aerodrome during World War Two when playing host to the famous 106 Squadron. Not many people know that one of its commanding officers was none other than Wing Commander Guy Gibson who helped to form 617 Squadron ( called the Dambusters) at RAF Scampton.

The memory still holds fast for the remaining war veterans who flew and maintained the Lancaster bombers which flew from this base. Only a few and war widows live to to tell the tale. But on 9th and the 10th of June, the gates will be open again from 10.30 am when the public are invited to the Metheringham Airfield Visitor Centre for the OPEN WEEKEND.

The two day event will have family attractions and children's amusement together with WW2 exhibits and memorabilia for visitors to enjoy. There will be bus tours of the old airfield, WW2 military vehicles on display, WW2 enactors together with displays, exhibitions, and classic cars. The air raid shelter will be opened to experience a bombing raid from the German Luftwaffe with sound effects, and a special treat for each day, a flying visit and display from the WW2 Lancaster bomber based at RAF Coningsby, weather permitting.

There will be a prize draw in the afternoon of the second day with the first prize of £106.00 in cash (commemorating 106 Squadron) and a second prize of an half an hour flying lesson, with further prizes to be won. All day refreshments are availble not to mention tasting the nation's Lincolnshire sausage cooked by local cuisiniers Christine and Judy.

Admission is:- single person £3.00 - children under 16 Free
