Last season despite finishing runners up in Division 3 of the South Lincolnshire and Borders league, Blankney Cricket Club failed to gain promotion. This season they were more than determined to put things right but with July ebbing away this looked a long way off.
New players had joined the club making them a formidable outfit and with an unbeaten run of over a dozen games they were neck and neck with Baston going into the final weekend.
Both sides were on the same points total and with the threat of rain things were in the lap of the gods. Baston beat their arch rivals Spalding. Blankney, hosting Pinchbeck saw veteran team captain Ian Holvey take 4 for 21 to see them bowled out for 116. Cameron Donald scored 43 and Simon Behan 53 not out to ease Blankney to a nine wicket victory inside 21 overs.
As soon as the winning run had been hit the heavens opened. Both Blankney and Baston had finished on the same points but Blankney had won a game more.
Another little irony was that Baston had been penalised a point for a clerical error which saw Blankney champions.
